Dangerous conditions led to injured AT hikers and treacherous terrain for rescuers
ROANOKE, Va. – First responders raced to the rescue after three hikers were injured and stranded while hiking the Appalachian Trail over the weekend. Rockbridge County Fire & Rescue Chief Nathan Ramsey said it would have been too difficult to carry them out on foot. Saturday’s rescue took 10 hours. That rescue took two hours and 17 first responders, lugging thermal blankets, ropes, and more. “You figure you have a 180-pound patient and you’re trying to walk them out and you’ve got unstable conditions,” said Zaronsky.
Lynchburg family thanks police officer who saved her from choking
LYNCHBURG, Va. A local woman and her daughters took the time to thank a Lynchburg Police officer who saved her life. Over the summer, that woman started choking when Officer Austin Rowland performed the Heimlich maneuver and saved her life. Earlier this summer, Officer Mike Johnson and Officer Austin Rowland were handling a late night callfor service when a resident started choking and turning blue. This morning they met up at Old ForestWalmart and the resident and her children surprised Officer Rowland with a balloon, cards, and hugs. Were grateful forthe quick action of Officer Rowland and for relationships like this that make our city so special.
California man dies trying to save drowning kids he had never met
REEDLEY, Calif. – As three children were swept away in a California river Wednesday, a brave bystander jumped in to help. The selfless hero was later identified as 29-year-old Manjeet Singh, according to a report by KFSN. After training ended he wanted to cool off, so he went down to Kings River with his brother-in-law to ride jet skis. Soon, he noticed a commotion in the water.Three children--one boy and two girls--got swept away by a current. It took rescue crews 40 minutes to find Singh and pull him out of the water.
Rescue underway for missing river floaters near Rocky Mount
ROCKY MOUNT, Va. Swift water rescue crews are working to save missing floaters on the Pigg River near Rocky Mount on Saturday night. The Franklin County Swift Water Rescue Team was activated to find four people who were reported missing between Rakes Road Bridge and the boat take out at Lynch Park. Two different people rescued from Dan River on Saturday
DANVILLE, Va. – Crews with the Danville Fire Department and other agencies responded to two different lifesaving calls on the Dan River on Saturday. First, they got a report just after 7:30 a.m. of a person in danger of falling into the river from the Main Street Bridge. The second call was for someone in the river after their kayak overturned just after 2 p.m.Crews arrived to find a man on some debris underneath the Norfolk Southern train trestle. Crews attempted a high angle rescue from the top of the train trestle. They were able to lower a rescuer to the victim, place a harness on the victim and pull him to safety, according to the Fire Department.
Roanoke rescue crew cuts through concrete wall to rescue construction worker
ROANOKE, Va. A Roanoke rescue crew saved a construction worker on Tuesday morning. At 9:35am, Roanoke Fire-EMS was dispatched to the 4200 Block of Lake Dr SW for a medical call. When units arrived, they found that a construction worker, who was working on the home had fallen into a void area under the house after experiencing a medical episode, according to Roanoke Fire-EMS. There was no exit where the man fell and he wasnt easily accessible from the floor that he fell through. To get him out, the departments Technical Rescue Team had to cut through an exterior wall.
