Now, his latest donation of $19,000 has helped create a music studio for the school. Lawmakers vote to abolish death penalty in Virginia

We all know the death penalty doesn't do that. Even last year, death penalty abolition bills in the General Assembly went nowhere. Historically, Virginia has used the death penalty more than any other state, executing nearly 1,400 people since its days as a colony, according to the Death Penalty Information Center. Since the U.S. Supreme Court reinstated the death penalty in 1976, Virginia, with 113 executions, is second only to Texas.

Old Dominion wins ‘Vocal Group of the Year’ at CMA Awards for third year in a row

2020 is proving to be a big year for a country band with ties to the Roanoke Valley. Old Dominion took home a CMA award on Wednesday night for “Vocal Group of the Year." This is the third year in a row the band has won in that category. As 10 News reported back in September, the group also took home the “Group of the Year” award at the 2020 American Country Music (ACM) Awards. That ACM Award was also their third in a row in that category.

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Gov. Ralph Northam’s executive order related to the coronavirus is being challenged by gun rights organizations. Citizens Defense League, Gun Owners of America, SafeSide Lynchburg and the Association of Virginia Gun Ranges filed the suit in Lynchburg Circuit Court challenging Executive Order 53, according to Attorney General Mark Herring’s office. Redemption for Patrick HenryThe last two seasons against Brookville, Patrick Henry High School had lost by a combined score of 80-13, including 52-0 last year. Determined for payback, Patrick Henry seemed like it might suffer another setback after Brookville rallied from a double-digit deficit in the second half to tie the game. But Patrick Henry quarterback Roy Gunn led what turned out to be the game-winning drive, scoring on a 20-yard touchdown run with 44 seconds left to give Patrick Henry a 28-21 win and some sweet redemption against Brookville.

Virginia Tech must limit minor errors against Old Dominion Saturday

BLACKSBURG, Va.- - The Virginia Tech Hokies are gearing up for Week 2 with Old Dominion coming to town. Last year, the Monarchs won on their turf 49-35 and now they're coming off a Week 1 win against Norfolk State. ROANOKE, Va.- - Old Dominion front man, Matthew Ramsey, is coming back to his hometown in Botetourt County for a special concert and he's bringing some friends. Tickets went on sale at noon Friday but people started lining up at the Buchanan Library early in the morning to guarantee some of the best seats in the house. Fans like Jennifer Myers got in line at 3 a.m. for tickets. "Matt came from a small town, just love the story how he made it big, it's just inspiring to people in a small town," said Jessica Myers, from Buchanan. Tickets will be on sale again Saturday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Buchanan Library.

Old Dominion front man to return to Botetourt County for annual benefit concert

A country music superstar is coming home to Botetourt County for a special one-night concert and he's bringing his songwriting friends with him. Matthew Ramsey, front man of Old Dominion, created the event several years ago as a way to make a difference in his hometown. He wanted to know what he could do to help the community.About a 100 people attended Nashville Night that first year in support of a local food pantry. She says this community has been so supportive and that was evident when Old Dominion played the Berglund Center last fall. Nashville Night tickets will be on sale at the Buchanan library on Aug. 16th from noon- 7 p.m. and Aug. 17th 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Gasperini, Stutler lead Delta Dental State Open of Virginia

Roanoke, Va. - Round one of the Delta Dental State Open of Virginia got underway bright and early Thursday morning at Ballyhack golf club..We have co-clubhouse leaders at -7. Radford senior Peter Gasperini and Manakin-Sabot pro Mason Stutler are tied at the top of the leaderboard. Busy signing day in Southwest Virginia

The second national signing day for the 2019 class in southwest Virginia meant a couple of key acquisitions for our Commonwealth colleges, and lots of local talent continuing their athletic and academic careers. Meanwhile at Virginia, the building process continues with head coach Bronco Mendenhall. Tackle Josmeer Blake and receiver/cornerback Aaron Moore both signed letters of intent to play for Glenville State College in West Virginia. Giving an example to the younger kids that one day being on that stage is possible," Weaver said. Other Eagles moving on include Quenton Elam to Virginia State and Marquis Carter to Ferrum.

Hokies Hire ODU's Zohn Burden as Wide Receivers Coach

BLACKSBURG (WSLS 10)- The Hokies have filled their vacant wide receivers coaching position by hiring Virginia native Zohn Burden. The VMI graduate joins the Virginia Tech Football program from Old Dominion, serving on the Monarchs squad for the past three seasons as passing coordinator. "We are excited to welcome Coach Burden and his family into the Hokie Nation," Coach Frank Beamer said in a release from the Virginia Tech Athletic department. "We appreciate the efforts of Coach Burden with our football program. Zohn helped start our program back in 2007 as one of the original staff members," says ODU Head Coach Bobby Wilder through the ODU Athletic department.
