August is normally one of the busiest months for animal shelters across the region, in part because of kitten season. But this year, there are other factors at play, making it even busier than usual as our area is seeing an increase in the number of animal intakes.
Danny takes life one step at a time
LYNCHBURG, Va. โ This pup doesnโt let a leg injury stop him from living his life. Danny is an 8-year-old dog that arrived at the Lynchburg Humane Society four months ago with an injury that affects his back legs. This tenacious pup went through several rounds of physical therapy and has improved tremendously. Danny only walks with his front legs, but he still loves taking a stroll around the neighborhood with his humans. Despite his injury, he is housebroken and would love to find a family who enjoys cuddling just as much as he does.
Sassy is the best name to describe this flamboyant cat
ROANOKE, Va. โ This raven-haired feline is expressive in her own way. You can make her tail wag happily by embracing her or playing with her favorite toy, a feather wand. The 1-year-old cat is currently in a loving foster home until she finds the right place for her. She has a gentle soul and enjoys being surrounded by other cats. ROANOKE, Va. โ Clear The Shelters has returned for 2020, and there is more time than ever to find the perfect pet this year. The Roanoke Valley Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) and Angels of Assisi are both participating in the event. โEvery adoption makes room for us to help another pet in need,โ said Roanoke Valley SPCA Executive Director Denise Hayes. โI have really high hopes for them and weโre ready to send these guys home,โ said Angels of Assisi adoption director April Saunders. โEvery adoption, while weโre happy for that pet, weโre also happy for the pet that comes behind them because we can save another life.โFor more information on Clear The Shelters, including a complete list of participating shelters in the area, click here.
'Huge opportunity': Local shelters ready to help more pets after Clear The Shelters
ROANOKE, Va. - Local animal shelters now have more room at a busy time of year thanks to another successful Clear The Shelters event. WSLS partnered with the Roanoke Valley SPCA and Lynchburg Humane Society Saturday to bring awareness to the need for pets to be adopted. The Roanoke Valley SPCA got 35 pets adopted, 33 on Saturday and two on Sunday. The Lynchburg Humane Society got 42 pets adopted Saturday. Since 2015, 250,000 pets have been adopted thanks to Clear The Shelters.
