Heat wave meets its demise Friday; localized flooding possible

ROANOKE, Va. Roanokes historic heat wave and Lynchburgs 4th-longest heat wave will both come to an end by Friday. Storms will start off rather spotty along and to the west of the Blue Ridge Parkway between 12 and 4 p.m. FutureTracker - Thursday nightThis front lingers nearby, keeping the chance for rain and storms in the forecast Friday and Saturday. High temperature trend for the next 5 daysOffshore, we are now tracking Tropical Storm Isaas. Two possible scenarios with Tropical Storm IsaasStay with us for updates on air and online throughout the next few days.

Heat waves days are numbered as rain, storm threat increases

ROANOKE, Va. Storms Wednesday provided temporary relief from the heat, but they werent quick enough to stop Roanokes historic 90 stretch. This will all bring us relief from the high heat, but could still pose a localized flood threat at times. Official track on the storm that will soon be IsaasThere are two ways this storm plays out for us. This storm moves over Hispaniola (the Dominican Republic and Haiti). This storm moves north of Hispaniola and can strengthen a bit.

Heat wave presses forward; subtle crash possible later this week

ROANOKE, Va. July 2020 has been one of the hottest on record for much of the area, with no signs of that stopping early this week. A downsloping wind (exactly as it sounds) means that the air will compress, which heats things up and dries things up as well. What a downsloping wind means for our areaCome Tuesday, a front will inch closer to the region. Its exact location will determine how many storms we see/if we get any relief from the constant heat. What We're Tracking later this weekFor now, we have storm chances highest on Thursday and Friday.

Current heat wave likely to challenge record length next week

In fact, Friday was the the hottest day of 2020 so far in Roanoke and Lynchburg with highs of 98 and 96 degrees, respectively. Roanoke’s heat wave (consecutive 90-degree days) has run to 17 days, which is tied for the second longest on record with heat waves in 1959 and 2007. Stretch of 90-degree heat (WSLS)While it won’t be quite as hot as yesterday, we’re likely to extend the heat wave to 18 days as highs peak in the 90s again this afternoon. Saturday's forecast (WSLS)A front draped across the region today will provide the lift needed for storms to develop once again. Saturday's flood risk (WSLS)Following today’s front, storm chances look lower Sunday but a few spotty showers and storms can’t be completely ruled out.

Isolation is hazardous to your health. The term social distancing doesnt help

Is the phrase social distancing sending the wrong message to millions of Americans who are struggling to get by during the COVID-19 pandemic? The moment I heard public health authorities use the term, I thought they were making a mistake, he said. AdvertisementReferring to those measures as physical distancing is more specific, more accurate and could ultimately save more lives, he said. Aldrich fears the phrase social distancing suggests we should be turning inward and closing ourselves off from friends and neighbors in the outside world. You need to have as close social ties as possible when physical distancing is in effect.AdvertisementAldrich studies how social connections affect death rates after disasters like hurricanes, volcanic eruptions and tsunamis.
