On 10 News at 6, we told you that Morehead may be wondering who let the dogs out when the night was over. While it looked rocky for a bit in the 4th, Martinsville did just enough on both sides of the ball in order to enjoy a ride back across the state line.
Thorne leads No. 11 Spartans past No. 13 Pitt in Peach Bowl
Payton Thorneโs 22-yard touchdown pass to Jayden Reed gave No. 11 Michigan State the lead with less than three minutes remaining and the Spartans overcame an 11-point deficit to beat No. 13 Pittsburgh 31-21 on Thursday night in the Peach Bowl.
Ferrum football opens season with win over Averett
Titus Jones was 21-30 passing for 239 yards and three touchdowns to lead Ferrum to the season opening win over Averett tonight at W.B. Adams Stadium. Tmahdae Penn made nine receptions for 131 yards and a pair of scores for the Panthers (1-0), and linebacker Deven Hanson had a 90-yard interception pick six. Bryce Jackson was 31-54 passing for 322 yards and two touchdowns for the Cougars (0-1). JaโKari Williams had nine tackles for Ferrum, while JaVon Lofton had eight for Averett.
Bueckers helps UConn rout High Point 102-59 in NCAA opener

Bueckers scored 24 points โ the most by a UConn player in her first NCAA Tournament game โ and the top-seeded Huskies routed High Point 102-59 in the first round Sunday. โWe just want to continue to win for him so he can get out here with us,โ Bueckers said. Muhl injured her left ankle in the Big East Tournament opener, but returned for the Huskies' game the next night. โI think that was a little bit of improv from some of the players," High Point coach Chelsea Banbury said.
Patrick Henry girls lead charge into State semifinals
Roanoke, Va. โ The Patrick Henry girls basketball team is back to back--Region 5D champs under head coach Mike Hedrick. in the state semifinals. Coach Hedrick says the visiting Panthers will bring a lot of size to Roanoke. If you see a game that looks some like a snail can compete, it could be a long night for us,โ Hedrick explains. The Patrick Henry boys will immediately follow the girls with a 6:30 p.m. start against Stone Bridge in the Class 5 boys state semifinals.
Viral and vital, college gymnasts finding their voice
The social justice movement in college athletics has popped up in most unusual place: gymnastics. From UCLA to Pittsburgh, Black gymnasts and the programs they represent are using their platform to empower and uplift. Her experience at Arkansas was simply reflective of the culture at large in the sport at the time. From Pittsburgh to California, female gymnasts are using their platform to empower, educate and bring light to causes they believe in. โPersonally I would say (gymnastics) is a predominantly white sport,โ Ward said.
Hokies earn third straight victory with 74-55 win at Pitt Thursday night
PITTSBURGH, PA โ The Virginia Tech womenโs basketball team earned its third successive victory Thursday night with a 74-55 win at Pitt. It was the fifth straight win over the Panthers for Kenny Brooksโ club. GAME NOTESโขVirginia Tech is now 12-5 against the Panthers and have won five in a row in the series. โขKenny Brooksโ record moves to 96-56 at Virginia Tech and 433-178 in his career. โขThe starting lineup of Georgia Amoore, Aisha Sheppard, Cayla King, Azana Baines and Elizabeth Kitley accounted for 65 points.
Johnson ends slump, Pitt tops No. 16 Virginia Tech 83-72
PITTSBURGH, Pa. โ Xavier Johnson scored a career-high 32 points and Pittsburgh beat No. 16 Virginia Tech 83-72 to end a three-game skid. He shot 11 of 17 from the floor, including 4 of 7 from 3-point range, as the Panthers had their way against a usually stingy Virginia Tech defense. They were more physical, they threw the ball into the post, we had absolutely no answer for Johnson,โ said Virginia Tech head coach Mike Young. They made sure to let us know that pittsburg identity is to be an extremely physical team,โ said Hokies forward Justyn Mutts.
ODAC Hoops: Roanoke men win conference opener, Lynchburg women fall to Bridgewater
ROANOKE, Va. โ After losing its season opener to Greensboro on Wednesday, the Roanoke College Maroons opened up ODAC play with much more intensity, leading to a 66-55 win over Hampden-Sydney. The Maroons, who were picked 4th as preseason favorites, welcomed the return of former Northside Viking Kasey Draper who made his season debut--tallying 16 points and 10 rebounds. At the Hive in Lynchburg, the women opened up ODAC play with Bridgewater. On the road, the Ferrum women also came up short to Randolph-Macon. The Yellow Jackets saw 4 players notch double-digit scoring performances including Cheridan Hatfield who lead with 16 points and Aimee Debell who added 15 points and 19 rebounds.

The Celtics ruled out Jaylen Brown, Javonte Green, Semi Ojeleye, Jayson Tatum, Tristan Thompson, Grant Williams and Robert Williams. A pair of other Celtics are injured, which leaves Boston with the minimum eight players available on Sunday. Players having to miss multiple days is a very real possibility even if they were exposed to someone with the virus.
Hokies end long stretch of games on the road at Pitt

Hokies prep for Pitt, UVA for Abilene Christian
Blacksburg, VA. โ The Hokies have Pitt on deck, but itโs all pending the Covid situation. Pittโs game with Georgia Tech was moved to December 12th as the team battles Covid issues. The Panthers paused football activities, but Hokies coach Justin Fuente says this โpending situationโ should not affect the teams preparation. Meanwhile Virginia has their lone departure from ACC play this weekend when they host FCS foe Abilene Christian. There werenโt many that could play or would play or had this date available to play," Bronco explained.
Liberty wins home opener in shootout with FIU
LYNCHBURG, Va. โ Liberty racked up more than 500 yards of offense in the 36-34 victory over FIU. For the second consecutive game, running back Joshua Mack rushed for over 100 yards while dual-threat quarterback Malik Willis passed for 285 yards and 2 touchdowns. Carolina Panthers sign Cam... Phillips
The Carolina Panthers announced on Wednesday afternoon that they signed wide receiver Cam Philips. Phillips led the league with 31 receptions, 455 yards receiving and nine touchdowns. Washington & Lee rolls to victory over Ferrum

W&L opened the scoring with 9:58 left in the second quarter when sophomore running back Alex Wertz (Sterling, Va. / Dominion) scored on a 7-yard touchdown run. Laughlin amassed 52 rushing yards on eight carries and he also completed 6-of-8 passes for 73 yards and one score. First-year running back Joe Burris III led the way with 58 yards and a touchdown on just eight carries. Washington and Lee will now enjoy a bye week, before returning to action on October 19 at Emory & Henry.
Averett's defense keeps Ferrum out of the end zone in 35-12 win
FERRUM, Va. - Ferrum dropped its home-opener football game 35-12 against Averett on Hall of Fame Weekend. Jacob Wright was 16-23 through the air for 229 yards and a pair of touchdowns for the Cougars (2-1). Brad Green was Ferrum's lone bright spot, setting a new school record with four field goals (21, 39, 29 and 33 yards). Hunter Hinson had a solid defensive effort for Averett with six solo and two assisted tackles. Billy Higgins had a solo tackle, seven assisted tackles, and a fumble recovery for the Panthers.
Ferrum football loaded with local talent, ready for second season under Grande
FERRUM, Va. โ At fall football practice, the sun beats down on a Ferrum program that's just warming up. The Panthers went 6-4 a year ago and in his second year at the helm, coach Rob Grande is ready to build off a solid first season. That set a tone I think in the second year," Grande said. There are big moves ahead for Ferrum as it joins the ODAC next season, but the Panthers aren't looking too far ahead. Just aiming to do well in their final season playing in the USA South.
