Haley Deeds named new principal of Cave Spring High School

ROANOKE, Va. – The Roanoke County School Board has named a familiar face as the new principal for Cave Spring High School. On Thursday, the school board announced that Haley Deeds will begin her new role as principal on July 1. “Haley played a major role in helping the staff through the recent major renovation and expansion of Cave Spring High School. teacher at Glen Cove Elementary School before moving to Northside Middle School in 2005 then Oak Grove and Fort Lewis elementary schools in 2011. The school board also announced that the current assistant principal of Penn Forest Elementary School, Jenny Griffin, will be replacing veteran principal Karen Pendleton who is also retiring this school year.

William Byrd sweeps track tri-meets

Vinton, Va. – William Byrd swept an area tri-meet against Glenvar and Cave Spring on Wednesday. Byrd’s Chloe Harilla won the long jump withg a leap of 15 feet two inches. In the Boys 1000 meter run, Byrd’s Keaton Brand won the race. And in the girls 55 meter dash, it was another Byrd victory. Cave Spring head boys’ basketball coach awarded Coach of the Year in Virginia

ROANOKE, Va. – Cave Spring High School’s head boy’s basketball coach, Jacob Gruse, was recently named the 2019-2020 Boy’s Coach of the Year by the VHSL. It was really humbling, I feel blessed, there are so many great coaches everywhere, especially in Virginia,” Gruse said. “They are well deserving of this award.”Gruse was named the Class 3 Boy’s Basketball Coach of the Year in April. Doesn’t happen without Derrick Roth, my associate head coach, Tim Myers my assistant coach, and Ethan Humphries who was our JV coach last year. And I had unbelievable players too, really good players make a really good coach.”Cave Spring is scheduled to begin practice for the 2020-2021 season on December 7.

Two students at Cave Spring High School have tested positive for COVID-19, according to school officials. According to a release sent out to families on Wednesday, no other students or staff members have been identified as at risk of exposure while in school. One student tests positive for COVID-19 at Cave Spring High School

ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. – One student has tested positive for coronavirus at Cave Spring High School. Roanoke County Public Schools announced this positive case Friday and said that no students or staff have been identified as at risk for exposure. This positive case notice was sent to parents and guardians of Cave Spring High students out of courtesy, according to Superintendent Dr. Ken Niceley. He said parents and guardians do not need to take any further action.

Two students at Cave Spring High School test positive for COVID-19

ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. – Roanoke County school leaders said there are two related student cases of COVID-19 at Cave Spring High School. “Close contact” is considered less than 6 feet, for at least 15 minutes, with or without a mask. As 10 News has reported, school leaders announced Monday that two students and one staff member tested positive. As of Tuesday night, the RCPS COVID-19 dashboard reflected a total of four cases among students and one case among staff at Cave Spring High School for the week of October 11-17. The only other recorded case at Cave Spring High School was a student case during the week of September 20-26.

Roanoke County Schools announces nine new coronavirus cases

ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. – There are nine new cases of coronavirus within Roanoke County schools, according to the district’s dashboard. As of Monday, the district’s dashboard shows that seven of those cases are students, and two are staff members. Two of the students and one of the staff members are in Cave Spring High School, according to school officials. School leaders said they’re working with the Roanoke and Alleghany Health Districts, and urge parents and guardians to monitor their families' health. ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. – Three people at Cave Spring High School have tested positive for COVID-19, school leaders announced on Monday. School leaders said the cases are unrelated. School leaders said they’re working with the Roanoke and Alleghany Health Districts. An exposure is determined by an individual who has had close contact with a person who tested positive for COVID-19. School leaders urged staff members and families to continue to monitor their families' health and check for COVID-19 symptoms.

Roanoke County unveils new Cave Spring High School after complete renovation

ROANOKE COUNTY, VA. – After years of planning and months of construction, some area high school students have a new home away from home. The puzzle that was the renovation at Cave Spring High School is complete, and while the school year is anything but normal, they’re starting to settle in. Whether it was a section of the school gutted to the studs, demolished or a brand new addition, the project is essentially complete. Cave Spring board member Mike Wray led a tour Friday and said it was a race to the finish. “I was here last week and I saw cabinets in the hallway and I said “Uh,” and Troy Smith, president of Avis, said, ’They’ll be done today, they’ll be done today,’” Wray said.

Cave Spring High School renovation nearly complete

ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. – A multi-year, multi-million dollar project to renovate Cave Spring High School is just about finished. Work was still on schedule at the high school Wednesday in Roanoke County despite being halted earlier this year when some workers tested positive for the coronavirus. Move-in could start as early as the end of the week according to the school district’s spokesperson. As 10 News has reported, the county spent $43 million on the school, focusing on safety and creating a 21st century building.

ROANOKE, Va. All westbound lanes of Interstate 64 in the Longdale Furnace community, will be closed at mile marker 35 today. The Virginia High School League Executive Committee will meet today. They will answer questions about the transition from essential operations to modified operations, which is schedule to take place on August 3rd.

25 COVID-19 cases connected to Cave Spring High School construction work

ROANOKE, Va. – More than two dozen coronavirus cases are connected to construction work at a local high school, according to Roanoke County Public Schools officials. The president of Avis Construction, Troy Smith, spoke to the Roanoke County school board on Tuesday and reported as many as 25 cases of COVID-19 that are related to construction work at Cave Spring High School. Smith told school board members that not all 25 cases are construction workers, but rather, some are family members of workers. All work was halted at the Cave Spring High School construction site on Monday, per recommendation from the health department. Smith told school officials he hopes construction work can resume on May 11, but the health department is giving “conflicting recommendations,” according to Roanoke County school officials.

'On budget, on target': Cave Spring High School construction more than halfway complete

ROANOKE, Va. - Construction is moving right along at Cave Spring High School, as plans for a huge transformation are finally taking shape. "I think people will be stunned when they really step foot in the door and see the transformed school," said Nathan Harper, director of design for Spectrum Design. Members of the Roanoke County School Board got their first look inside the new school Monday. "When you see the walls come up and it really takes shape, it's really exciting. You know that it's really coming together," Roanoke County School Board member Mike Wray said.

Back to school means back to construction for hundreds of students

ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. - As students head back to school, many are heading back to construction projects worth millions of dollars. "Everybody's adjusting and they've adjusted real well," Roanoke County School Board member Mike Wray said. Students at Cave Spring High School spent day one, Monday, in modular classrooms, while a major renovation and expansion project continues. Making the school more modern and safer is a priority that crosses district lines into Roanoke city, as construction on Fallon Park Elementary School chugs along. Salem High School is still designing plans for a $36 million renovation, in hopes of starting construction next summer.

Deans of students hired for Roanoke County high schools

ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. - When the new school year begins next month in Roanoke County, administrators at the county's high schools should have more time to spend on instruction now, thanks to the dean of students that has been hired for each high school. "We're really trying to accelerate the instructional programs at the high school level, so we want to give our principals the support they need to be able to focus on those," Roanoke County Superintendent Dr. Ken Nicely said. Cave Spring High School already has a dean of students. Nicely said principals at the county's other high schools saw the value of the position, so the district found the money in it's operating budget to hire a dean of students for every high school. They'll be on a year-to-year contract and will make between what a teacher and an assistant principal make, according to Nicely.

Roanoke, Va. – At Patrick Henry High School and Cave Spring High School no less than 22 more athletes are heading to the next level. Eleven student-athletes are moving on from each school. The two schools held signing day events to honor the athletes.
