10 News annual month-long campaign to Clear the Shelters has come to a close, and we have a wonderful update. Nearly 1,000 animals were adopted during this time period from partner shelters across Southwest Virginia.

NBCUniversal Local’s Clear The Shelters nationwide pet adoption and donation initiative has now resulted in more than one million adoptions since its 2015 inception as more than 157,000 pets found new homes during the 2023 campaign.

Blue is a 9-month-old Pit Bull mix located at the Roanoke Regional Center for Animal Care and Protection.

Meet Puff! This 8-year-old cat is a total love bug.

LYNCHBURG, Va. – This pup doesn’t let a leg injury stop him from living his life. Danny is an 8-year-old dog that arrived at the Lynchburg Humane Society four months ago with an injury that affects his back legs. This tenacious pup went through several rounds of physical therapy and has improved tremendously. Danny only walks with his front legs, but he still loves taking a stroll around the neighborhood with his humans. Despite his injury, he is housebroken and would love to find a family who enjoys cuddling just as much as he does.

ROANOKE, Va. – This raven-haired feline is expressive in her own way. You can make her tail wag happily by embracing her or playing with her favorite toy, a feather wand. The 1-year-old cat is currently in a loving foster home until she finds the right place for her. She has a gentle soul and enjoys being surrounded by other cats. If you are interested in adopting Sassy, you can find her at the Regional Center for Animal Care and Protection.

ROANOKE, Va. – Clear The Shelters has returned for 2020, and there is more time than ever to find the perfect pet this year. The Roanoke Valley Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) and Angels of Assisi are both participating in the event. “Every adoption makes room for us to help another pet in need,” said Roanoke Valley SPCA Executive Director Denise Hayes. “I have really high hopes for them and we’re ready to send these guys home,” said Angels of Assisi adoption director April Saunders. “Every adoption, while we’re happy for that pet, we’re also happy for the pet that comes behind them because we can save another life.”For more information on Clear The Shelters, including a complete list of participating shelters in the area, click here.

ROANOKE, Va. - Local animal shelters now have more room at a busy time of year thanks to another successful Clear The Shelters event. WSLS partnered with the Roanoke Valley SPCA and Lynchburg Humane Society Saturday to bring awareness to the need for pets to be adopted. The Roanoke Valley SPCA got 35 pets adopted, 33 on Saturday and two on Sunday. The Lynchburg Humane Society got 42 pets adopted Saturday. Since 2015, 250,000 pets have been adopted thanks to Clear The Shelters.
