A ribbon-cutting marked the completion of a new apartment complex in the Madison Heights area of Amherst County, as Waukeshaw Development converted the old Phelps Elementary School. The group is also converting the old Bedford Middle School, which was set on fire last year.
Man arrested in Amherst County for meth distribution, deputies say
AMHERST COUNTY, Va. – Authorities said they arrested an Amherst County man last week for distributing meth. On March 11, investigators and the Central Virginia Drug and Gang Task Force executed a search warrant on Secluded Acres Dr. in Madison Heights, according to the Amherst County Sheriff’s Office. As a result, Jamie Orlando Carter was charged with the distribution of 100 grams or more of meth. You can see the full release below:
Man wanted for shooting out of a vehicle in Madison Heights: police
MADISON HEIGHTS, Va. – Authorities in Amherst County need your help finding a man they say shot outside of a vehicle in Madison Heights Saturday afternoon. Warrants have been obtained for Zachary Logan Brown for reckless handling of firearm, shooting from a vehicle and driving on a revoked license, according to the Amherst County Sheriff’s Office. It happened around 2:45 p.m. Saturday on Main Street following a report of shots being fired from a vehicle. No one was injured. If you have information that can help Amherst County deputies locate Brown, call 911 or the sheriff’s office at 434-946-9373.
VDOT starting much-anticipated Amherst County sidewalk project
AMHERST COUNTY, Va. – Construction on a much-anticipated sidewalk project is getting underway in Amherst County. VDOT crews will begin working along Route 29 Business in Madison Heights, between Route 1054, Lakeview Drive, and Route 682, Woody’s Lake Road. Paula Jones, a VDOT spokesperson representing Amherst County, told 10 News this is a way of improving safety in the area. The project costs about $2 million and is scheduled to be complete by November 2021. Below is a map of the 1.4-mile stretch of road that will have a sidewalk:
Amherst County vet offers Veterans Day discount at his shoeshine business

Fourth person charged with murdering man found in burned-out SUV in Appomattox County
BEDFORD COUNTY, Va. – Authorities say a fourth person has been charged in connection to the murder of a Bedford County man who was found inside of a burned-out SUV. Keyanta Robinson, 20, of Madison Heights has been charged with the first-degree murder of Carlos Rose, according to the Appomattox County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities say they are still wanted and have not been found. Robinson was previously identified in photos as a person wearing a blue surgical mask at the Madison Heights Walmart on Oct. 21. The following people have also been charged with first-degree murder in connection to the case:Anyone with information on Robinson or Green’s location is asked to call the Appomattox County Sheriff’s Office at 434-352-8241.
Woman arrested in connection with stabbing, Lynchburg police chase, authorities say
AMHERST COUNTY, Va. – A woman was arrested for malicious wounding among other charges after multiple disturbance reports were made on Tuesday night, according to the Amherst County Sheriff’s Office. At 9:25 p.m., the Sheriff’s Office said they received a call about a disturbance in the Walmart parking lot in Madison Heights. Shortly after at 9:36 p.m., the Sheriff’s Office said they got a disturbance report about a man who had been stabbed on Seminole Drive in Madison Heights. Authorities said Kimberly Dawn Driskill was identified as the assailant and was driving a white Dodge pick-up truck. She was transported to Lynchburg General Hospital for evaluation where the victim who was stabbed was also transported for treatment.

Michigan Company and Its Owner Sentenced for Illegally Storing Hazardous Waste
The Honorable Stephen J. Murphy issued the sentence, having accepted each of their pleas of guilty to a federal hazardous waste storage felony on Feb. 14, 2019. After these chemicals no longer served their intended purpose, they became hazardous wastes, which required handling in compliance with the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. Ultimately, the EPAs Superfund program spent $1,449,963.94 to clean up and dispose of the hazardous wastes. Starting in 1996, the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) repeatedly sent him warnings about his illegal handling of hazardous waste. In January 2017, the EPA initiated a Superfund removal action, after determining that nature and threats posed by the stored hazardous waste required a time-critical response.justice.gov
20 people arrested so far in roundup of drug, firearm offenders in Amherst County
AMHERST COUNTY, Va. - Amherst County authorities have arrested 20 people so far in a roundup of people who were indicted on Oct. 8 on drug and firearm offenses, among other charges. Christopher Bush, 45, of Madison Heights, was arrested on one count of distribution of methamphetamine Schedule I or II. Atha Dunn, 36, of Madison Heights, was arrested on four counts of distribution of methamphetamine Schedule I or II. Daniel Lips, 42, of Madison Heights, was arrested on three counts of distribution methamphetamine Schedule I or II. Brittany Nicole Mabry, 28 of Madison Heights arrested on one count of prisoner possession/sale/secrete unlawful chemical compound.
Father killed by son in Amherst County shooting, sheriff says
AMHERST COUNTY, Va. - Sheriff E. W. Viar confirms to 10 News that the suspect and victim in Tuesday's deadly shooting are father and son. Chis Austin, 47, is charged with second-degree murder in connection with the shooting death of his father, 83-year-old John Austin. UPDATE (8:52 p.m. Oct. 1, 2019)Authorities say John Austin of Madison Heights is the victim of Tuesday's homicide in Amherst County. He is charged with second-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Shortly after 3 p.m., the Amherst County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of gunshots in the 100 block of Riverview Road in Madison Heights.
Neighbors, community react to deadly shooting in Amherst County
AMHERST COUNTY, Va. - One man is behind bars and another is dead after a shooting in Amherst County. John Austin was shot and killed in his home along Riverview Road just after 3 p.m. Tuesday, according to Amherst County Sheriff E.W. "I asked God, you know, to forgive the person and everything and pray for the family and pray for the community," Wesley said. As the Sheriff's Office continues its investigation, Wesley says the community will come together to heal. You don't know what state of mind person was in...what the person was going through then and anybody can snap," Wesley said.
Madison Heights man dead after tire blowout on Interstate 81 in Montgomery County
MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Va. - A Madison Heights man is dead after his tire blew out on Interstate 81, causing him to crash. Virginia State Police is investigating this single-vehicle crash that happened Friday at 10:19 a.m. in Montgomery County on I-81 at mile marker 124. Mark Sprouse, 44, of Madison Heights, was driving a box truck south when, according to witnesses, the front driver's side tire blew out, Virginia State Police says. He crashed through the guardrail and hit a rock embankment, according to Virginia State Police. Virginia State Police says the crash remains under investigation.

AMHERST COUNTY, Va. - Ice cream lovers in Amherst County will lose a popular spot later this summer. Sluggo's Sundae Drive in Madison Heights is closing the doors of its retail store on August 11. Horizon's new intermediate care facility to open for Central Training Virginia Center patients
LYNCHBURG, Va. - Contractors are putting their final touches on Horizon Behavioral Healths new intermediate care facility on Lakeview Drive. The organization's ninth facility comes after state officials decided theyd be closing the Central Virginia Training Center in Madison Heights at the end of the year. From what I understand, there are 45 individuals still at the Central Training Virginia Center. We also talked a little about a proposal that we put in for leasing some buildings at the training center. The 24/7 center will be a lot more spacious compared to their eight other intermediate care facilities.
