Trooper, K-9 injured after vehicle was repeatedly hit during highspeed Charlotte County pursuit
CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Va. – A Virginia State Police Trooper and his K-9 sustained injuries during an early Friday morning pursuit in Charlotte County. Meeks responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle driving around a private property on Ridgeway Farm Lane in Charlotte County. However, the driver of Volvo rammed his vehicle into the trooper’s vehicle before leaving the scene at a high speed. Authorities said a pursuit was initiated afterward with assistance from a Charlotte County Sheriff’s Deputy. He and his K-9 sustained minor injuries during the pursuit and are receiving treatment.
Gov. Ralph Northam assesses storm damage in Southside
CHARLOTTE COURT HOUSE, Va – Hundreds of people in Southside are going on nearly two weeks without power after the area was hit hard by winter storms. Ralph Northam visited the area to assess the damage. “The first storm, which was really bad I’ve never seen ice like that, and the power went off. Northam spent time with some of the crews who have been working long shifts in dangerous conditions. AdBouldin is one of many people in the Charlotte Court House area who has been without power for almost two weeks.

Nonprofit donates Gatorade, Muscle Milk and blankets to help those without power in Charlotte County
Eighty percent of Charlotte County is still without power, according to Gleaning For The World and the non-profit said there is no indication of when power will return. The organization has offered its support by donating about 2,500 blankets and over 1,000 bottles of Gatorade and Muscle Milk to the Charlotte County firehouse..“We hope these items will help provide comfort to those dealing with this power outage,” said Gleaning president Jeane Smiley-Mason. “The electrolyte drinks and protein shakes should help during a time when folks simply cannot cook in their homes. Our prayers are with everyone facing this difficult circumstance right now.”Gleaning For The World plans to contact Charlotte County officials to provide more help given that another ice storm is forecasted for Thursday. Virginia State Police trooper arrested, indicted on rape charge, other sex crimes
CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Va. – A Virginia State Police trooper is in jail after being indicted by a grand jury on charges of multiple sex crimes. On Thursday, authorities arrested Derrick Thompson, of Drakes Branch, on charges of rape, sodomy and object sexual penetration. Police said the indictments handed down by a Charlotte County grand jury stem from a state police investigation into an incident reported to the department in September 2020. He was taken into custody without incident and is being held at the New River Regional Jail without bond, according to State Police. Thompson was suspended without pay pending the outcome of the judicial process, according to State Police.
Charlotte County man reported missing found safe
CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Va. – UPDATEA 74-year-old man reported missing out of Charlotte County has been found safe, according to the county’s sheriff’s office. Authorities had issued a senior alert for Richard Bankston just before 6 p.m. Monday/ORIGINAL STORYAuthorities are looking for a 74-year-old man who was last seen Monday in Charlotte County. Virginia State Police issued a senior alert for Richard Bankston just before 6 p.m.Bankston was last seen on Richardson Road at 12:30 p.m. in Keysville. At the time he was possibly wearing a long sleeve, dark-colored shirt and dark nylon sweatpants with white tennis shoes. Anyone with information is asked to call 911 or the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office at 434-542-5141.

The Roanoke City Council meets officially for the first time with new members Robert Jeffrey and Stephanie Moon. No one can attend the Roanoke City Council meeting in person today because of COVID. City Council members will be the only ones allowed in council chambers. Martinsville City Council meets this morning where Tammy Pearson will be sworn in as a newly elected council member.

Charlotte County schools likely won’t begin in-person learning until mid-October
CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Va. – Coronavirus cases are on the rise in Virginia and Charlotte County Public Schools are taking extra precautions. The school district announced on Wednesday that it will delay in-person hybrid learning to October 19 because of increasing COVID-19 cases in the county. Due to a dramatic rise in overall COVID-19 cases in Charlotte County, as well as an increase in positive COVID-19 cases... Danville man charged with DUI in connection with fatal crash
CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Va. – A Danville man is facing several charges, including DUI manslaughter, after a fatal crash in Charlotte County on April 4, according to the Virginia State Police. The single-vehicle crash happened on April 4 just after 1 a.m. on Route 360, less than a mile west of Route 710, according to Virginia State Police. He was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle, according to Virginia State Police. One was treated and released; the other is still being treated at VCU Medical Center, according to Virginia State Police. Williams is being held without bond at the Charlotte County Jail.
Man dead, three hurt after Charlotte County crash
CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Va. – A man is dead and two others are hurt after a crash in Charlotte County on Saturday, according to Virginia State Police. Authorities say the driver, a woman from Danville, was flown to VCU Medical Center in Richmond for treatment of serious injuries. According to police, a second passenger, a woman from Fredericksburg, was flown to VCU Medical Center in Richmond for treatment of serious injuries. Police say the third passenger, a man from Danville, was treated at Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital for minor injuries. According to police, the crash remains under investigation and charges are pending.

Man arrested in Charlotte County with 3 pounds of marijuana during traffic stop
CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Va. - Authorities arrested a man they say had about 3 pounds of marijuana in his car during a traffic stop in Charlotte County Thursday. Jeremy Ray, 25, of Greensboro, North Carolina, was stopped by deputies with the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office on U.S. Highway 360. They seized about 3 pounds of marijuana, more than $1,000 in cash and items related to the distribution of marijuana, according to the Sheriff's Office. $6.3 million in broadband funding authorized for Bedford County
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The FCC authorized $47.5 million in funding to expand broadband services in 11 rural counties in Virginia. The 11 counties, which include Bedford and Charlotte, will receive the funding over the next decade. The two counties in Virginia to receive the highest amount in this wave of funding are Charlotte County, which is receiving $9,136,405, and Bedford County, which is receiving $6,364,758. In Charlotte County, the funding will support 3,657 locations, while in Bedford County, it will support 3,343 locations. Providers will begin receiving funding later this month.
