Congressmen urge Gov. Northam to allow more fans at high school sports games
Ralph Northam recently loosened COVID-19 restrictions for outdoor high school sporting events, some Virginia Congressmen feel they’re still too restrictive. He also pushed for Northam to follow CDC’s 6-foot distancing guidelines instead of 10 feet that’s currently in Executive Order 72. AdThe order currently allows outdoor high school sports to have 30% of the occupancy load or a maximum of 250 spectators per field. “Governor Northam’s decision to require 10-foot distancing and allow no more than 250 fans at an outdoor stadium that potentially holds thousands is insufficient. Earlier this week northside high school had to suspend all activities after members of the football program tested positive.

Virginia lawmakers discuss ceremonial Electoral College count
LYNCHBURG, Va. – Protesters gathered in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday to show support for President Trump one day before Congress certifies the Electoral College results. What is usually a ceremonial counting of the votes, that each state has already certified, is drawing nationwide attention because some Republicans plan to object. [Rep. Ben Cline says he’ll object the Electoral College certification process]Meanwhile, Virginia Democratic Sen. Mark Warner plans to certify the votes and said the count could take a while. “It does seem that there’s evidence of fraud, there’s evidence that laws were not followed in accordance with the state legislators who make those laws in those respectful states,” said Good. Warner said he expects the majority of Republicans to certify the 306 electoral votes for President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kalama Harris.

Campbell County crowd protests Gov. Northam’s social distancing order
CAMPBELL COUNTY, Va. – More than 100 people came together in a Campbell County park on Saturday in defiance of Gov. Ralph Northam’s executive order on capacity limits. The rally was organized by the Campbell County Militia after Northam’s order limited gatherings in Virginia to twenty-five people or less. “These are edicts that have been handed down by decree from one man,” said Wes Gardner of the Campbell County Militia. We’ve got to live our lives as free people.”Campbell County Militia member Kurt Santini said he’s so upset with Northam’s tenure as governor that he will run for governor himself in 2021.

UVA Center for Politics weighs in on the 5th district’s political ads
ROANOKE, Va – It’s considered one of the closest congressional races in the country, but experts with the University of Virginia’s Center for Politics says the ads for Virginia’s 5th congressional district could not be more different. Coleman says when it comes to republican Bob Good’s ad’s he takes a more traditional route. As for Democrat Cameron Webb, Coleman says he takes more of a moderate approach to appeal to voters who may traditionally vote Republican. Coleman says a majority of political ads come from organizations not related to the candidates. The Center for Politics has the 5th district race as a toss-up.

ROANOKE, Va. – Voters in Virginia’s 5th Congressional District will fill an open seat after Republican Denver Riggleman was ousted in the primary by former Campbell County Supervisor Bob Good. Good is taking a hard-core conservative stance on the issues, hoping the right-leaning district will stay red on Election Day. Virginia’s 5th District is normally a safe seat for Republicans, but this time pundits are expecting a close race between Republican Bob Good, and Democrat Dr. Cameron Webb in the district that’s larger than the state of New Jersey. If there is a central issue that has arisen in the fight for the seat, it’s support for police. He’s counting on a huge turnout for the president with long coattails in the 5th District; otherwise, the Republicans may be counted out in a race they can normally count on to stay red.

Early voting started in Virginia on Friday and President Donald Trump has tweeted who he thinks should win one of the state’s races. Trump tweeted his endorsement for Virginia’s 5th Congressional District Republican candidate Bob Good, along with his opposition towards the current governor, Ralph Northam. The president said Good will be a terrific congressman for Virginia and that he has his “complete and total” endorsement. “[Northam] is in favor of executing babies after birth - this isn’t late-term abortion, this is a step way beyond!” tweeted Trump. The president finished his series of three tweets by saying that he will announce a big rally somewhere in Virginia soon.

In an interview with 10 News on Wednesday, Virginia’s 5th District congressman criticized fellow Virginia GOP members as moving too far to the political right. “Republicans have always been about a big tent party, centered on individual liberty, and I think we’ve lost our way,” Riggleman said. “What if there was a governor who cares about the people of Virginia rather than just a party platform of moving on up?” Riggleman said. “If they can have a message of hope and a message that is not completely extremist, I think that’s the person that is going to win.”
Election Board ‘reluctantly’ grants extension, Bob Good will be on November ballot
RICHMOND, Va. – After a passionate discussion on Tuesday afternoon, those in Virginia’s 5th Congressional District will see Republican Bob Good on the ballot in November. Good, who spoke during the State Board of Elections meeting, admitted that he missed the June 9 filing deadline, something he has never denied. Good said that the delegates arrived at the convention “fully knowledgeable” that he was three days late in filing his form. Some felt that the candidate who was selected by the people should be able to represent them on the ballot. Others; however, felt that missing this deadline was an unacceptable oversight and an extension should not be granted.

According to Webbs campaign site, he was tapped by President Obama for the White House Fellowship. He also served on the White House Health Care Team and also worked on President Obamas My Brothers Keeper Initiative, where he helped tackle issues in education, workforce development and criminal justice reform.

HENRY COUNTY, Va. – Four democrats will face off on June 23 in a primary for Virginia’s 5th congressional district. The winner will face Republican Bob Good in November’s general election. Policing and the fight for racial equality, broadband expansion to rural areas and health care top their list of importance. The candidates expect a smaller crowd at the polls due to more absentee ballot submissions in lieu of in-person voting. The Virginia Department of Elections expects to release an update polling location list next week.

Challenger Bob Good knocked off incumbent 5th District Rep. Denver Riggleman in the district’s convention on Saturday. Good told his supporters shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday that he defeated Riggleman 58 percent to 42 percent. “We look forward to making the 5th District bright red again, as this is a strong conservative district,” Good told supporters in his victory speech. Delegates select GOP Fifth Congressional District nominee at drive-through convention
LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Fifth Congressional District will likely know its Republican nominee on November’s ballot by the end of the weekend. Delegates chose between incumbent Rep. Denver Riggleman and former Campbell County Supervisor Bob Good during a drive-through convention at Tree of Life Ministries on Saturday. The conventions are normally conducted in person, but the district switched to a drive-through model due to COVID-19. However, Fifth Congressional District Republican Chairman Marvin Adams believes the party will unite no matter which candidate wins. 10 News attempted to contact Rep. Riggleman, but has not received a response.
