Hokies earn third straight victory with 74-55 win at Pitt Thursday night

PITTSBURGH, PA – The Virginia Tech women’s basketball team earned its third successive victory Thursday night with a 74-55 win at Pitt. It was the fifth straight win over the Panthers for Kenny Brooks’ club. GAME NOTES•Virginia Tech is now 12-5 against the Panthers and have won five in a row in the series. •Kenny Brooks’ record moves to 96-56 at Virginia Tech and 433-178 in his career. •The starting lineup of Georgia Amoore, Aisha Sheppard, Cayla King, Azana Baines and Elizabeth Kitley accounted for 65 points.

Liberty’s win streak reaches 10 with 78-46 triumph over Jacksonville

The Lady Flames’ final 32-point margin of victory (78-46) marked their largest ever in an ASUN Conference game. Key Team Stats: Liberty’s three triples made equaled a season low, but the Lady Flames shot 30-of-44 (68.2 percent) from inside the arc. The Lady Flames scored 23 points off Jacksonville’s 18 turnovers and tripled up the visitors in bench points (39-13). AdThird Quarter• Nine different Lady Flames scored points in the third quarter. The Lady Flames’ 32-point margin of victory was their largest since a 73-36 triumph over Longwood on Feb. 27, 2018 at the Vines Center.

Lynchburg women’s basketball using length and versatility to advantage in 2021

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Lynchburg lady Hornets went 13-14 overall last year, but head coach Katie Crump says maturity and experience will be the catalyst in games this season. “We’ve got so much experience coming back, we did lose a few,” Crump said. Another asset Lynchburg possesses is length and versatility, which was on display in Saturday’s opener. “What’s really cool about our team is really versatile, anywhere on the court we have assets that can knock the ball down,” Quarrels said. And while 2021 started off with a close loss to Bridgewater, they know the energy will carry them far.

Radford edged by UNC Asheville in shootout

RADFORD, Va. – Ariel Williams scored a career-high 25 points Friday night but visiting UNC Asheville defeated Radford in a high-scoring affair, 84-80, inside the Dedmon Center. UNC Asheville upped the defensive pressure out of the break, forcing five Highlander turnovers in the first three minutes of the frame. A late 10-1 run put UNC Asheville ahead by 12, 77-65, with two minutes left in the game. Nadiria Evans led all scorers with 31 points for UNC Asheville, and also added six rebounds and five assists. UP NEXTRadford and UNC Asheville close their two-game series Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m.

Virginia Opens Conference Play With a 71-55 Loss to Clemson

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia women’s basketball team (0-4, 0-1 ACC) opened Atlantic Coast Conference play with a 71-55 loss to Clemson (6-0, 1-0 ACC) on Thursday (Dec. 10) at John Paul Jones Arena. Redshirt sophomore guard Amandine Toi (Paris, France) scored a career-high 23 points, going 5-of-9 from three-point range. Clemson went on a 13-0 run in the second quarter to build up a 43-27 lead at the break. Clemson mounted a 12-2 run to build back up a 69-52 advantage, a run ended by another and-one from Lawson. They played hard, they go downhill, they play a lot of people and we don’t have a lot of people to play.

King’s career high 29 leads Hokies to initial ACC victory

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech women’s basketball team was down early and trailed by as many as 11, but regrouped at halftime and earned an 88-71 victory over Pitt Thursday night on Carilion Clinic Court at Cassell Coliseum. The win moves the Hokies to 6-0 and 1-0 in the league. The Hokies are now 8-9 all-time in ACC openers and 9-8 in ACC home openersGAME NOTES•Virginia Tech is now 11-5 against the Panthers•Kenny Brooks’ record moves to 92-49 at Virginia Tech and 429-171 in his career. •King’s 29 points are a career-best as were her 37 minutes played, seven field goals and eight free throws made. Lady Flames Announce Revamped 2020-21 ASUN WBB Schedule

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Liberty women’s basketball team has announced its revamped 16-game league schedule for the Lady Flames' third season of ASUN Conference play in 2020-21. The Lady Flames' conference-opening road swing will take them to Stetson (Jan. 2) and ASUN newcomer Bellarmine (Jan. 4). For the second year in a row, the Lady Flames will head to Kennesaw State for their regular-season finale, March 1. Active StreaksThe Lady Flames will enter ASUN play with their longest conference winning streak during two seasons as a conference member. The Lady Flames have defeated eight straight ASUN opponents overall, also including the 2020 ASUN Championship triumphs over Kennesaw State and North Alabama.

The Latest on the effects of the coronavirus outbreak on sports around the world:___Milwaukee Brewers manager Craig Counsell says shortstop Luis Urias and pitcher Angel Perdomo tested positive for COVID-19 before the intake process. This marks the second setback for Urias since the Brewers acquired him from San Diego in November. Major League Baseball and the players association announced Friday that 31 players and seven staff members tested positive for COVID-19 during intake for the resumption of training, a rate of 1.2%. Players and staff were tested Friday, and general manager Mike Rizzo says the team still hasnt received its results. The WNBA hopes to start training camp later this week, with the regular season set to begin around July 24.
