How a Biden election win could shake up U.S. and Irish economic ties
DUBLIN — Ballina, a town in County Mayo in the west of Ireland, recently unveiled a striking mural in its town center of a familiar face: Joe Biden. It's a connection to the country that his opponent, current President Donald Trump isn't able to claim, unless his golf course counts. "I think we would expect a President Biden to be much more pro-European, pro-transatlantic relations than we've seen from the Trump White House," Tina Fordham, head of global political strategy at Avonhurst, told CNBC. "I have no doubt that Ireland would feel like it has more of a friend in the White House but it's a combination of the White House and Congress in that case. Even under a second term for President Trump, there would be that attention to upholding the Good Friday Agreement," Fordham added.cnbc.com
Rising rates seem to signal a recovery is near, but investors wonder whether they can be believed
The spread between five- and 30-year Treasurys hit nearly a four-year high, and corporate debt has traded firm against the rising government rates. Fidelity's head of macro strategy Jurrien Timmer last week notes that Treasury yields have simply been catching up to other indicators of a "reflation" trade that have been working for a while. The 10-year Treasury yield has just levitated enough to meet its steeply down-sloping 200-day average, a potential friction area for the yield rally on a first approach. The Russell 1000 Value index relative to the Russell 1000 Growth measure has gained some traction, and to some eyes, is building a foundation for further comeback. The peak of Treasury yields and value relative performance was June 8, days after a surprisingly strong jobs report and at a peak of "reopening the economy" enthusiasm.cnbc.com

Progress is the word in Brexit trade talks before summit
(Brian Lawless/PA via AP)BRUSSELS – The European Union finally sees progress in trade talks with the United Kingdom, but insists a momentary change in mood between the oft-bickering sides is no guarantee that an agreement will be delivered on time, officials said Thursday. “I would say that the mood appears to have changed," Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin said when he hosted European Council President Charles Michel. It does need substance to follow the mood," he added, urging the negotiators meeting in London this week to speed up progress. In diplomatic delegations in Brussels where member states eagerly follow the talks EU negotiator Michel Barnier has with his counterpart David Frost, there is the same sense of change in the air. In London, the government said the talks would go on straight through to next week's EU summit.

Fed's Bostic says new virus hasn't changed his outlook
"We did three cuts and right now they are working their way through the economy," Bostic said of the Fed's interest-rate reductions last year. "But given our past recent experience with these sorts of things, I don't think it should; it hasn't changed my outlook or my expectation about our rates path." Futures tied to the Fed's policy rate, which in early January showed most bets were on a rate cut by November, now suggest two rate cuts are likely by year's end. Bostic noted that while inflation has missed the Fed's 2% target as measured by the personal consumption expenditures price index, it is at or near target by other measures. The Fed could, he suggested, use a range of measures to judge whether it is meeting its inflation target, not just PCE inflation.cnbc.com
