‘Respect the process’: Giles County school board chair explains virtual learning decision
PEARISBURG, Va. – Giles County school board chair Stevie Steele admits moving the district back to virtual learning because of COVID-19 was a difficult decision, but he believes it was the right decision. “You can’t keep the kids and teachers in the building 24/7,” Steele said. We can’t do that in the real world.”The school district restarted remote learning this week, and will continue to do so until at least January 6. The school board met in a work session Thursday to discuss investing in upgrades to roofs and heating systems at the county’s schools. Steele said that will likely become a multi-year, multi-million dollar project, which he knows may anger some of Giles County’s teachers.
Pearisburg police: Husband, wife dead after murder-suicide
PEARISBURG, Va. – Police in Pearisburg are investigating a murder-suicide that left a married couple dead. Investigators said they got a 911 call just after 8 a.m. on Tuesday from a family member who went to check on the couple. When they arrived at the home on the 300 block of Orchard Drive, they found both the husband and wife dead. Pearisburg Police Chief Jackie Martin said the victims are a married couple in their 60s. They also said they did not expect this tragedy to happen because the couple seemed quiet and friendly.
Police investigating after couple found shot dead in their Pearisburg home
PEARISBURG, Va. Authorities are investigating after a married couple in their 60s was found shot to death in their Pearisburg home on Tuesday. A family member went to do a welfare check around 8 a.m. and called police, according to Jackie Martin, chief of the Pearisburg Police Department. Police say the two were found dead once officers arrived, both with a single gunshot wound. Police say the bodies have been sent to the medical examiners office.

Outpouring of donations to help an officer’s cause prompts police to help others
GILES COUNTY, Va. – An officer’s goodwill to help a family in need has sparked an outpouring of support across the New River Valley, especially in Giles County. Danny Ratcliffe, of the Pearisburg Police Department, to raise money and donations for a family in need. Ratcliffe took to Facebook asking for the community’s help after he responded to a call where he met a single mom and her six children. Ratcliffe told 10 News he collected more than $1,000 in two days from generous community members, plus gift cards and $500 worth of groceries. The response has been so great, the Pearisburg Police Department posted on its Facebook page and is now looking for more families it can help this holiday.
