5 years to the day, John Szefc’s hiring at Virginia Tech leads to a Super Regional berth
It was five years ago to the day that John Szefc was announced as Virginia Tech’s next head baseball coach. And what a ride it’s been unfolding all the way to this weekend in the Super Regionals, where the Hokies are one of the final 16 teams in the country left playing baseball.
UVA headed to Greenville Regional for NCAA Baseball Tournament
The Virginia Cavaliers will make back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances after receiving an at-large bid. The Cavaliers were tabbed as the No. 2 seed for the the Greenville Regional in the NCAA DI Baseball Tournament. They will open play with Coastal Carolina Friday at 6 p.m. with the game to be aired on ESPN+.
No. 4 Virginia Tech baseball to host NCAA Regional
No. 4 Virginia Tech has been selected to be a regional host in the upcoming NCAA DI Baseball Tournament. While the Hokies received that news Sunday, they found out during Monday’s selection show that they will welcome in Wright State, Columbia and Gonzaga to the Blacksburg Regional. Games will begin Friday with the Hokies opening play with Wright State.
No. 5 Hokies even series with No. 7 Louisville
Staked an early lead by Gavin Cross hitting his 12th home run of the season on Saturday, the No. 5 Virginia Tech baseball team held off No. 7 Louisville, 4-3, to even the teams’ top-10 ACC series at English Field at Atlantic Union Bank Park.Cross was sound on both sides of the ball for Virginia Tech (35-11, 15-9 ACC), which defeated Louisville (35-14-1, 16-9-1 ACC) for the first time since the Cardinals joined the league in 2015. Tech’s third-year outfielder homered to account for the first two runs of the Hokies’ three-run third inning, later inducing the timely 8-4 double play during the eighth inning that wiped the bases clean for reliever Henry Weycker.
