LYNCHBURG, Va. – Police arrested a Lynchburg man after receiving multiple reports of someone firing shots into the air on Valentine’s Day night. Just before 11 p.m., police learned that a man was shooting a gun into the air near a Ford SUV in the 900 block of Pierce Street, according to the Lynchburg Police Department. Officers responded and about three blocks away, at the intersection of Piece Street and 12th Street found the SUV. Police arrested the driver, 47-year-old Kevin Nailor, of Lynchburg, and charged him with the following crimes:Driving under the influenceReckless handling of a firearmDischarging a firearm within city limitsTwo counts of possession of a Schedule I/II substancePossession of a firearm while in possession of a Schedule I/II substancePolice said that no one was hurt and there were no reports of property damage as a result of the gunfire. After limiting restaurants to 25% capacity and 25 people per room, restaurants now must remain at 25% but they can serve as many as 50 per room. They are also this Valentine’s Day willing to do something else over a weekend where the high temperature will reach the teens and the low will plummet well below zero. AdIn Portland, a couple married 55 years has special Valentine’s Day plans. “That’s Valentine’s Day!” her father exclaimed and smiled at his wife.

ROANOKE, Va. – Although we still have winter weather alerts in effect until tomorrow morning, the heaviest precipitation has moved out. A mix of freezing rain and sleet has been moving through Southside and the Lynchburg area for a few hours already. That’s where we’ll see the most significant ice accumulations and biggest impacts from this storm. Winter weather advisories have been posted in these areas. The next opportunity for winter weather comes Monday night into Tuesday morning.

BEDFORD COUNTY, Va. – We’re still a few days away from Valentine’s Day, but many of you are already showing the love! Bedford County libraries received an overwhelming response for this year’s “Valentines for Vets” campaign. Cassandra Baldwin, youth services coordinator for Bedford County libraries, thinks so many people participated because of the pandemic. We’re told Bedford libraries usually collect about 200 cards each year. They’ve hosted the “Valentines for Vets” campaign for more than a decade.

ROANOKE, Va – Flower shops in the Star City are gearing up for what they say will likely be the busiest Valentine’s Day yet. George’s Flowers is celebrating its 40th Valentine’s Day in Roanoke this year. Each year the shop brings in two large trucks to help deliver flowers across the city. George’s Flowers brings in a dozen contracted drivers to help with Valentine’s Day deliveries each year. Clements says they have been letting customers know about the potential delays for the last week or so.

Once again, the Science Museum of Western Virginia in downtown Roanoke is giving you the chance to name a cockroach after someone special. “This year, I think what we’re trying to do is obviously raise some money but also spread a bit of joy and happiness this Valentine’s Day. This will be the third year that we’ve done the cockroach fundraiser and we just want people to have some fun with it,” said Koren Smith, director of marketing for the Science Museum of Western Virginia. It only costs you $5 and you’ll get an e-card that you can send to that “special” someone.

With love in the air, Julie Wheeler, president and CEO of Better Business Bureau Serving Western Virginia said people become more vulnerable and the number of romance scams become more popular. On the flip side, Cupid visited Roanoke Valley lovers in 1990 with 70+ degree warmth. This may surprise some of you, but Roanoke hasn’t been all that snowy on Valentine’s Day.

Starting on Valentine’s Day, the nonprofit will post a kindness challenge for the next day, hoping you’ll follow through with a blessing a stranger. If you’re making coffee at home, take a cup to a coworker, those kinds of things. That costs nothing, a smile costs nothing, absolutely nothing,” said Debra Ferrell, the founder of Love With Skin On.
