Virginia health officials remind parents to get students vaccinated
As schools prepare for the fall semester, the Virginia Department of Health is reminding all parents about the immunization requirements for children and young adults. Virginia state law requires specific immunizations that students, depending on their age group, must have to enroll in school. Unless there is a religious exemption, getting immunizations and making sure they are up to date are the first steps of a childโs early education. Though the vaccination requirements of young adults may not be as obvious a step, they are equally as important.
Cosmopolitan track meet kicks off with record-breaking performance in pole vault
The Cosmopolitan track meet returned to the Roanoke Valley on Thursday, a tradition steeped in history, starting in 1966. 40 schools and more than 1800 student-athletes flock to William Fleming this weekend, with middle school, junior, and senior high school represented.

William Fleming gets key win over Staunton River amid playoff push
ROANOKE, Va. โ Coming into the night fifth in Region 5D standings with only four teams qualifying this season, William Fleming needed a win. With a decisive 42-0 victory and a loss by Harrisonburg, itโs likely the two teams will flip flop. Fleming certainly wonโt be able to coast into the postseason as the Colonels wrap the regular season campaign against Franklin County.
Roanoke City high schools will have in-person graduations this spring
ROANOKE, Va. โ Families and graduates will have the chance to celebrate the Class of 2021 in a more traditional way this year. Both of Roanokeโs high schools, Patrick Henry and William Fleming, will hold in-person graduation events, the school board announced during its meeting on Tuesday. This announcement follows the new guidelines from the Northam administration that allow for up to 5,000 people, or 30% capacity, whichever is less at outdoor graduation venues. For indoor ceremonies, the maximum number of attendees drops to 500, while the building capacity remains at 30%.
William Fleming gets first win of the season with 32-22 defeat of Glenvar
SALEM, Va. โ Glenvar got within a point of William Fleming, but the Colonels outlasted the Highlanders on Tuesday night. In the third quarter, Fleming only led 23-22; however, the Colonels would go on to score 9-straight and go home with a 32-22 victory.

ROANOKE, Va. โ The third time is typically the charm, but not for the William Fleming girls on Tuesday night. They faced off with cross-town rival Patrick Henry for the third time this season, this time in the Region 5D Semifinals. Back at the home of the Colonels, the William Fleming boys had no problems with Albemarle-- coming away with a 61-21 victory. Lord Botetourt defeated Carroll County 86-46, advancing to the Region 3D Semifinals. They will play at Northside, which defeated William Byrd Tuesday night.

ROANOKE, Va. โ Magna Vista found itself in the Region 3D Tournament on Monday night against William Byrd. But William Byrd outscored Magna Vista 24-6 in the second quarter. William Byrd won 71-41, advancing to the Region 3D Quarterfinals to take on Northside on Tuesday at 6pm. On the ladies side, William Fleming notched a big 68-21 win over visiting Brooke Point in the Region 5D Quarterfinals. Next up for the Colonels is a Region 5D Semifinal matchup with cross-town rival Patrick Henry, Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
VMI welcomes 3 locals on signing day, Glenvar has 2 make commitments
LEXINGTON, Va. โ On the first day of the February signing period, Scott Wachenheim and the Keydets announced nine signees to the 2021 recruiting class. โWe are excited to add nine future cadet-athletes to our VMI Football 2021 signing class, said Wachenheim. They complement our December signees and give us the ability to compete for future SoCon championships,โ said head coach Scott Wachenheim. AdHe joins other Patrick Henry football players Trace Pedigo, redshirt freshman Daniel Cox and Sophomore Leroy Thomas on the VMI roster. This is the first time the football team has signed two athletes in the same class to full-ride scholarships.

Roanoke City schools welcome back student-athletes for workouts
But itโs a huge step when you consider it marks the beginning of the return of high school athletics in the state of Virginia. Patrick Henry and William Fleming were back on the football field today, with strict social-distancing guidelines in place. I think thatโs what these 3-4 months has taught us is just how much just being around each other means. Patrick Henry volleyball also started workouts Monday. The VHSL is set to meet in about 3 1-2 more weeks to further discuss possible fall sports scenarios.
Fleming football sending 40 percent of their senior roster to next level

NBA player, Roanoke native Troy Daniels donates to Roanoke City Schools
Roanoke, Va. โ Roanoke native and current Denver Nuggets guard Troy Daniels has donated $3,000 to help Roanoke City Schools feed children during the weekends. Roanoke City Schools tweeted out a thank you to the William Fleming grad on Thursday. The 6-year NBA proโs trek to pro basketball started at William Fleming, then took him to VCU. He broke into the league with Houston, and has had stints with Minnesota, Charlotte, Memphis, Phoenix and the Los Angeles Lakers and is now a Denver Nugget.
Roanokeโs Mayor hosts annual Leaโs High School Winter Classic Tournament
ROANOKE, Va. โ High school basketball players from around the Roanoke Valley played on Roanokeโs largest stage this weekend. The annual tournament at the Berglund Center showcased the areaโs largest rivalries, including William Fleming vs. Patrick Henry and North Cross vs. Roanoke Catholic. Lea said he organized the tournament to unite the city and the county through sports. Money received from the tournament will go to non-profits in the Roanoke Valley.

ROANOKE, Va. - Update: Troy Daniels agrees to a 1-year deal with the Lakers for 2.1 million dollars. Six years ago nearly to the day, William Fleming grad and Virginia Commonwealth University alumni Troy Daniels was waiting for the same phone call. And so began the winding and unpredictable NBA career of a free agent. "I can't really complain, I'm blessed, I'm undrafted, I'm in the NBA. Fleming girls, Radford boys post region tournament victories
ROANOKE, Va. โ For the second time in as many years, the Region 5D final is an all Roanoke affair. William Fleming flogged Potomac 79-43 while Patrick Henry defeated Brooke Point 53-39. In other girls action Friday night, Carroll Co. won the 4D title over Pulaski Co. by a 44-36 score. On the boys side, Jefferson Forest needed overtime to outlast GW Danville 61-54 for the boyd 4D title. In the 5D boys tournament, Patrick Henry was eliminated on the road by a 67-64 score at Potomac.
Lady Colonels win Region title over rival Patrick Henry
ROANOKE, Va. โ William Fleming moved to 23-1 on the season by defeating rival Patrick Henry for the Class 5 Region D crown. The Lady Colonels will now take on Thomas Edison Friday night in Roanoke. Patrick Henry will take on Freedom (South Riding) in their state quarterfinal matchup. "This team has done an excellent job following through with what they started out with the expectations and we still playing. The Roanoke Catholic girls advanced with a win over Broadway 56-34.

ROANOKE, Va. โ The Northside boys remain perfect on the year, downing Hidden Valley 61-36 to win the Region 3D championship. At Eastern Montgomery High School George Wythe outlasted Covington to win the 1C title. Elsewhere the Parry McCluer girls win the 1C title over Galax and William Fleming's girls win their semifinal in Region 5D over Mountain View 75-50. Fleming guard signs to Longwood
ROANOKE, Va. โ After suffering an ACL injury in the first game of her high school career, William Fleming's Qwonneshia "Que" King has signed on to play at Longwood University. The 5-foot 5-inch point guard led the Colonels to a state semifinal appearance and the program's first ever finals appearance in 2016. Congratulations to Qwonneshia and coach Champ Hubbard.
