Cosmopolitan track meet kicks off with record-breaking performance in pole vault
The Cosmopolitan track meet returned to the Roanoke Valley on Thursday, a tradition steeped in history, starting in 1966. 40 schools and more than 1800 student-athletes flock to William Fleming this weekend, with middle school, junior, and senior high school represented.

New Patrick Henry fieldhouse becoming a reality
Roanoke, Va. – The countdown is underway to the completion of the new fieldhouse at Patrick Henry High School. You can see it every day when you show up for work, it’s really exciting and you could see it’s going up. And it’s very massive out there but I will be excited to get in it hopefully by next season, " Patrick Henry head football coach Alan Fiddler says. Ad“It’s been discussed since I’ve been here, so it took a lot of work and lot of really good people to get the project done,“ Fiddler added. School leaders expect the fieldhouse to be complete by July 1st.

Patrick Henry girls basketball coach Mike Hedrick resigns
ROANOKE, Va. – Patrick Henry girls basketball head coach Mike Hedrick announced Wednesday that he has resigned from his position with the Patriots. He has accepted a head coaching position in the Atlanta metro area. Parry McCluer wins first ever hoops title; Pulaski County, PH girls finish as runner-ups
Spencer Hamilton scored 17 points, 8 rebounds and 5 blocks in the 56-39 win, as Parry McCluer won its first VHSL State Championship in program history. Ad“Two out of three years we’ve been to state title game, we get a little closer every year,” said Pulaski County head coach Scott Ratcliff. This season they reached a VHSL State Championship game for the first time in program history. The difference was, we made a few turnovers we didn’t want to and we had some shots that didn’t go in,” said Patrick Henry head coach Mike Hedrick. With the win Princess Anne has now won 8 consecutive VHSL State Championships, 12 overall as a program.
Patrick Henry girls join Class 5 elite programs
Coach Mike Hedrick’s PH girls have made four consecutive state tournament appearances, two final 4′s, and now--their first ever state title appearance after Wednesday night’s resounding semifinal win over Potomac Falls. The Patrick Henry girls have become a mainstay in the Class 5 elite. This is a great generation if you show them you love them. Hedrick and the PH girls are an astounding 72-22 over the past four seasons. The Class 5 State Final vs seven-time defending champ Princess Anne is set for 5 pm Saturday at Patrick Henry High School.

ROANOKE, Va. – It was a busy night in Southwest Virginia with nearly a dozen area teams competing in the VHSL basketball state semifinals. Starting with Class 5 girls action, Patrick Henry dispatched visiting Potomac Falls 61-37 to advance to the program’s first state final. “Very blessed to have the players I have, very lucky to have Savannah Derey here for every game I’ve ever coached,” Hedrick explained. AdIn Pulaski County, the girls basketball Region D champions hosted Loudon Valley, who won the Region C title. In girls Class 2 action, Glenvar had a tall task in trying to topple defending Class 2 Champion Gate City.
Patrick Henry girls lead charge into State semifinals
Roanoke, Va. – The Patrick Henry girls basketball team is back to back--Region 5D champs under head coach Mike Hedrick. in the state semifinals. Coach Hedrick says the visiting Panthers will bring a lot of size to Roanoke. If you see a game that looks some like a snail can compete, it could be a long night for us,” Hedrick explains. The Patrick Henry boys will immediately follow the girls with a 6:30 p.m. start against Stone Bridge in the Class 5 boys state semifinals.

Though the shots didn’t fall at the rate that they would’ve liked, the Patriots remained tenacious at the defensive end. “We didn’t shoot the ball very well tonight but, we played really hard and refused to lose,” said Patrick Henry head coach Mike Hedrick. “[We] survived and advanced and now we have the opportunity to play for the final four, maybe the opportunity to maybe play for state title and that’s why we do this. The Patrick Henry boys will also host a Class 5 State Semifinal on Wednesday at 7pm when Stone Bridge comes to the Star City.

Patrick Henry soccer star Erick Kilosho signs with UVA
ROANOKE, Va. – Patrick Henry’s Erick Kilosho committed to the University of Virginia on Tuesday afternoon in front of his head coach and family, becoming the fourth Patriot since 2010 to play soccer for the Cavaliers. The most recent player would be Irakoze Donasiyano, who was taken in the first round of the MLS Draft to Nashville. Kilosho said Tuesday that he’s thankful for the preparation that the Patrick Henry’s soccer program has provided for him to get to the next level and he’s excited to get started in Charlottesville. Coach Doughty helps me a lot. It matches my play.”Kilosho is also hopeful for a spring soccer season, which is expected to start in April.
Football players at Glenvar, Patrick Henry sign to the next level
The Glenvar football program made history, signing two players from the same class to full-ride scholarships at the next level. “It’s crazy that I’ve played one year and I get to go play college football, Division I, I’m so thankful,” offensive lineman Jeb Secrist said. “It’s just a weight off my shoulders, it’s been hard for sure,” offensive lineman Jacob Crowder said. It’s nice to be done, know where you’re going, and just focus on the season.” Crowder is heading to Catawba College. Patrick Henry’s Roy Gunn also signed to play football at VMI on Wednesday.
