Investigators identify Lynchburg officer who hit man trying to escape police on horseback
LYNCHBURG, Va. โ Investigators have identified the officer who accidentally hit a man trying to escape police on a horse, according to the Lynchburg Police Department. Officer Michael Johnson, assigned to Patrol Operations, is the officer who accidentally hit Steve Rucker Jr., 57, of Amherst and has been with the department for six years, according to officials. Police told Rucker Jr. he had a warrant for violating a protective order, but authorities said he did not comply with the officersโ orders. AdAbout 14 minutes later, police said Rucker Jr. fell off his horse at 15th and Polk Streets while officers were still trying to stop him. However, as authorities approached him, Lynchburg Police said one officer accidentally hit him with a vehicle as he was laying in the roadway.

According to Lynchburg Police, officers immediately took action and requested the Lynchburg Fire Department for medical assistance. Lynchburg Police requested that Virginia State Police investigated the incident, and the involved officer has been placed on restricted duty.
Police still searching for person of interest following deadly Lynchburg shooting

31-year-old Lynchburg man dies less than a week after apartment shooting
LYNCHBURG โ UPDATE: Jan. 3, 2021, at 1:50 p.m. Authorities confirm that the victim of last weekโs shooting at McCausland Ridge Apartment died on Saturday. 31-year-old Ricky Johnson, of Lynchburg, succumbed to his injuries from the gunshot wound he received on Dec. 28, 2020. 61-year-old dies after Lynchburg pedestrian crash
LYNCHBURG, Va. โ Lynchburg Police are investigating a vehicle crash that resulted in the death of a pedestrian Tuesday night. At 11:33 p.m., authorities responded to the 1500 block of Graves Mill Road for a report of someone who was injured in a parking lot. Officers said that when they arrived on the scene, they found one pedestrian that was hit by the vehicle. 61-year-old Rhonda Hayes, of Lynchburg, was pronounced dead on the scene. Use of ForceThe Lynchburg Police Department has banned the use of chokeholds for at least the last 50 years. Sworn employees are never authorized to use the chokehold technique or any type of neck restraint unless deadly force is authorized. Duty to Intervene: Sworn employees have an obligation to protect the public and other employees. It shall be the duty of every sworn employee who witnesses inappropriate action by another officer to report that inappropriate action as soon as possible.
