VHSL Class 3 Wrestling Championships
SALEM, Va. – Sunday offered another great day of action on the wrestling mats in Salem with Class 3 schools vying for State Title gold. In semifinals action, JB Dragovich of Hidden Valley battled hard against Phoenix Alya of Skyline but would lose by pin fall at 2:14. In wrestlebacks, Dragovich would go on to place third in the 120 weight class. Preston would finish as runner-up after falling to Travis Ragland of New Kent by major decision. Tingler would place 6th in the 138 weight class.

WATCH: Fleming and LB boys among teams to advance in Region hoops
ROANOKE, Va. – The third time is typically the charm, but not for the William Fleming girls on Tuesday night. They faced off with cross-town rival Patrick Henry for the third time this season, this time in the Region 5D Semifinals. Back at the home of the Colonels, the William Fleming boys had no problems with Albemarle-- coming away with a 61-21 victory. Lord Botetourt defeated Carroll County 86-46, advancing to the Region 3D Semifinals. They will play at Northside, which defeated William Byrd Tuesday night.

ROANOKE, Va. – Magna Vista found itself in the Region 3D Tournament on Monday night against William Byrd. But William Byrd outscored Magna Vista 24-6 in the second quarter. William Byrd won 71-41, advancing to the Region 3D Quarterfinals to take on Northside on Tuesday at 6pm. On the ladies side, William Fleming notched a big 68-21 win over visiting Brooke Point in the Region 5D Quarterfinals. Next up for the Colonels is a Region 5D Semifinal matchup with cross-town rival Patrick Henry, Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.

Area seniors-only softball game to be played in Salem
ROANOKE, Va. For area softball seniors who missed out on their final season due to the coronavirus, they now have a chance to play one last game. Former William Byrd star Kassie Brammer is organizing the event, which will be held at the Burton softball fields. On both days, games will start at 7 p.m. with a senior ceremony held at 5:45 p.m. This is your last chance, youre a senior, you deserve this. Youre starting in your starting position and playing all seven innings.

William Byrd head coach carries on legacy of friend's life lost in battle
VINTON, Va.- - Every Friday night a piece of paper is taped into the locker of every William Byrd football player, listing a fallen soldier, their history, along with a quote. "It's also a great opportunity as a coach to teach these kids really what life is about, and that's what coaching is about. It's been a great opportunity for me," Lutz said. "Clarence (Adams) and I were high school teammates and anyone who has played the game of football, especially at the high school level, you get the bond," Lutz said. "One of the things that I enjoy about it the most is we're teaching kids that sacrifice has nothing to do with football," Lutz said.

Patriots' Cook captures Week 5 honors
ROANOKE, Va. - Patrick Henry had never played William Byrd before, and senior all-purpose athlete Jalen Cook made sure he left a lasting first impression. Cook is normally a workhorse running back and return specialist. Cook returned an interception 99 yards for a score, and also turned in an 88 yard kickoff return for touchdown in the Patrick Henry win over the Terriers. The talented senior also rushed for 48 yards and caught a pass for 13 more to total 248 all-purpose yards for the Patriots. Coach Alan Fiddler's team moves to 4-1 on the season, and senior star Jalen Cook is your 1st and 10 Player of the Week for Week five.

New football era begins at William Byrd
VINTON, Va. - A new era of football is underway at William Byrd. Brad Lutz steps in after a 38-year reign by Jeff Highfill in Vinton. Lutz comes to William Byrd from Broadway, where he spent ten seasons there. Lutz quickly put his stamp on the Terriers, taking them to a three-day retreat mini-camp at Shrine Mont in the Shenandoah Valley. "Following up Coach Highfill - there's some big shoes there, but you know I put a lot of pressure on myself as a coach anyway.
