SOUTH BOSTON, Va. – South Boston police arrested a man at an urgent care office on Friday morning they said accidentally shot a gun he never should have had. At 10:26 a.m., police responded to a shots fired call at the Velocity Urgent Care on Old Halifax Road. They arrived to find that someone had accidentally shot a gun in the office and there was some minor damage within the building and no one was injured, according to the Police Department. Officers arrested Larry Dornell Henderson, 55, of Iowa, and charged him with the following counts:Knowingly carry a concealed weapon after being convicted of a felony (felony charge)Knowingly and intentionally possessing a firearm after having been convicted of a felony (felony charge)Recklessly handling a firearm so as to endanger the life, limb, or property of another (misdemeanor charge)Henderson was taken to the Halifax Adult Detention Center under a $3,500 secure bond, according to police.
Police asking for information after second bomb threat at South Boston business this year
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. – Authorities are looking to find the person responsible for calling in two fake bomb threats on Wednesday. At about 8:40 a.m., Integrated Textile Solutions on Parker Avenue in South Boston received two calls indicating that there was a bomb in the building. The company evacuated its employees for about four hours while the South Boston Police Department and two K-9 Virginia State Police officers searched the building. Back on January 11, someone called in a bomb threat at the same building. Quinn Tucker is facing several charges after stealing merchandise from Walmart and running away from police, according to the South Boston Police Department. A South Boston man is facing several charges after police said he stole some merchandise from Walmart. On Feb. 22, officers said they responded to a call that Quinn Tucker was seen near the Bojangles on Old Halifax Road. During his arrest, officers said they found merchandise on Tucker that was stolen from Walmart. Tucker was charged with petit larceny, malicious wounding, violating pre-trial conditions and a probation violation, authorities said.

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. – The South Boston Police Department is searching for the man they say held someone at gunpoint before stealing their car Friday night. Authorities said the victim reported he was approached by a man who initially asked him for a cigarette. The man police say stole the car fled the scene in the victim’s gold 2009 four-door Kia with Virginia license plate XRS-9608. Police describe the man as someone in his 20s to 30s and about five feet, seven inches to five feet, nine inches tall. The call came in at about 11:30 a.m. with a report of a bomb at Integrated Textile Solutions on Parker Avenue in South Boston. Hundreds line up for free food and toy giveaway in South Boston
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. – A Christmas food and toy giveaway attracted a crowd to a South Boston strip mall Sunday afternoon. The group God’s Final Call and Warning partnered with South Boston’s Seventh-Day Adventist Church to create a free market with pantry goods and holiday gifts. “With COVID-19, you’re talking about people who are in need,” said Ralph Rhyne of God’s Final Call and Warning. “Some had nearly more than they could carry.”The customers included Philyn Knight, a South Boston mother who found wrapped gifts for her daughter and new appliances such as an Instant Pot. “It’s such a delight because it speaks to the greater need,” Betts said.

'Unbelievable' snowfall blankets parts of the Northeast
“If you do not have to be on the roads, please don't travel,” said New York Gov. “This is the fastest rate of snowfall I've ever encountered,” he said. Boston had more than 9 inches (23 centimeters) of snow early Thursday morning, breaking the previous record for the date of 6.4 inches (16.3 centimeters) in 2013. Parts of northern New England saw as much as 7 inches (18 centimeters) of snow per hour, said Margaret Curtis, meteorologist for the National Weather Service. Snow totals topped 3 feet across a wide swath of New Hampshire, and Maine's southernmost county saw 1 to 2 feet.
Police searching for ‘armed and dangerous man’ in connection to South Boston shooting
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. – The South Boston Police Department is searching for a man they consider armed and dangerous after he shot at an SUV outside a convenience store Thursday afternoon. At about 3 p.m., South Boston Police said that they responded to shots that were fired on North Main Street near College Street. The SUV then turned into the J&M One Stop Shop and stuck an unoccupied and parked van. According to authorities, the SUV left the scene headed south, and the two shooters left in headed north. Authorities said 23-year-old Tequan Jamal Watson, a former South Boston resident, was identified as one of the shooters.

17-year-old hurt in accidental shooting in South Boston
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. – Police in South Boston said a teenager was treated Thursday for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. At about 2:30 p.m., officers responded to a call that someone in the 1900 block of Farragut Avenue had been shot, according to the South Boston Police Department. Officers arrived to find a 17-year-old boy with what looked like a small caliber gunshot wound. In the teenager’s statement, he said it was an accidental shooting, according to police. Virginia’s first large-scale CBD oil extraction facility opens in Halifax County
Ralph Northam, Virginia’s Agriculture and Forestry Secretary, local leaders and facility founders cut the ribbon on a brand-new hemp laboratory in Halifax County. The new multi-million-dollar facility works to extract CBD oil from hemp plants. It’s Virginia’s first large-scale industrial hemp processing and CBD oil extraction facility, according to the governor. It’s really going to do so much to support our farmers,” said Virginia Secretary of Agriculture and Forestry Bettina Ring. The extraction plant will work directly with farmers who grow hemp to produce CBD oil and other products, sold both domestically and internationally.

DANVILLE, Va. – Ralph Rhyne is driven to serve the less fortunate throughout Southside Virginia, and he said Ruth Bader Ginsburg was a large inspiration to his mission. "She stood for the less fortunate, and for those who didn’t have a voice.”After Bader Ginsburg died Friday at the age of 87, Rhyne gave away food to less fortunate families in her memory. Rhyne and his group, God’s Final Warning Call Ministry, delivered boxes of essential food from their headquarters in Danville to the Emmanuel Seventh-Day Adventist Church in South Boston on Sunday. “Every time we do these, we run out of food before we run out of people, so the need is great," Green said. “The more we band together, the more we can float through this pandemic and rise above it," Rhyne said.
Investigation underway after a man was hospitalized, gunshots heard in South Boston
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. – South Boston Police are investigating two incidents involving gunshots in Halifax County Thursday night. At about 5:15 p.m., officers responded to the Emergency Department at Halifax Sentara Regional Hospital after a man was shot and treated for an apparent gunshot wound, according to police. Authorities said they spoke with the victim, a 33-year-old man from Halifax County. The man said he was in the 2100 block of North Main St. when he heard about nine or 10 gunshots and was shot in the leg. A portion of the proceeds from each sale goes to the Hope for Adoption Foundation which provides grant money to families looking to adopt. We know its easier and its healthier for individuals to receive a lot of their care through telehealth, said Northam. Shots fired at a football stadium in South Boston
South Boston, Va. According to the South Boston police department, shots were fired Friday around 10 p.m. at a football stadium near a middle school in South Boston. According to authorities, a 17-year-old make fired shots after an argument and fight subsequently broke out. Officers say they took the subject into custody and he was taken before a Juvenile Intake Officer. Discharging a Weapon on School Property, and Underage Possession of a Firearm. The suspect is being held at W.W. Moore Juvenile Detention Facility in Danville.
South Boston Speedway cancels season opener
HALIFAX COUNTY, Va. – You’ll have to wait a little longer to see cars on the track at South Boston Speedway. The track announced Wednesday afternoon Saturday’s season opener and the accompanying fireworks show have been canceled. Anyone who bought a ticket will get a refund. According to track officials, they made the decision because of the restrictions of Phase 3 of Governor Ralph Northam’s plan to reopen Virginia and “implications to the speedway’s insurance coverage.”Phase 3 is scheduled to begin July 1.
‘The tip of the iceberg’: South Boston hemp processing facility could have big economic impact
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. – We’re learning more about the potential economic impact the state’s first large-scale hemp processing plant could have on southwest Virginia. Blue Ribbon Extraction’s facility in South Boston could process more than $100 million worth of hemp and create dozens of jobs. As 10 News reported, the company announced plans Thursday to initially buy $70 million worth of hemp and create 22 jobs over the next three years. Virginia’s first large-scale industrial hemp, CBD processing facility coming to Halifax County
HALIFAX COUNTY, Va. – A major hemp processing facility is coming to Halifax County. Blue Ribbon Extraction is investing $3.26 million to establish Virginia’s first large-scale industrial hemp processing and cannabidiol (CBD) oil extraction facility in South Boston. The facility will be located in the old Blue Ridge Beverage building in the Houghton Industrial Park. Blue Ribbon Extraction said it will source more than 90% of its hemp from Virginia growers, which will result in more than $70 million going back to Virginia farmers for the next three years. Company leaders said they expect to be to process up to 5,000 pounds of industrial hemp per day, primarily grown by local farmers, most of whom are current or former tobacco farmers.
South Boston furniture store damaged by floodwaters in span of 15 minutes
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. Some businesses in Southside have a lot of work to do after Wednesdays flooding. Several businesses in the Hupps Mill Shopping Plaza in South Boston were flooded, including Badcock Furniture. According to the owner, everything happened in a span of 15 minutes. Sandbags were put up out back when employees noticed water in the parking lot, but it was too little too late. They were standing in front of the store because the water had already started rising.
A man is dead after a possible hit-and-run in South Boston
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. – A man is dead after an apparent hit-and-run in South Boston Saturday night. The South Boston Police Department received a call around 11 p.m. for a person lying by the side of the street near Howard Avenue. Upon arrival, officers say they found 48-year-old Donald Jeffreys of South Boston dead with injuries that appeared to be consistent with being hit by a car. Warrants were obtained for 47-year-old Quincy Eugene Moore of South Boston in reference to the incident. Anyone with information is asked to call the South Boston Police Department.

High water, fallen trees causing road closures

A detour is in place using U. S. Highway 360. An alternate route is 460 west to Princeton to Interstate 77, then Wolf Creek Road to Narrows. In Franklin County, part of Route 116 is closed in the Coopers Cove area because part of the road collapsed. The lane closure is about 1.5 miles east of Windridge Parkway and one mile west of Coopers Cove Road.
Two arrested, charged after Halifax County murder

Darrin Lamont Crawley, 30, of South Boston, was arrested Wednesday and charged with first-degree murder and using a firearm in the commission of a felony. Lucy Bouldin Cook, 28, of South Boston, was arrested Tuesday and charged with obstruction of justice. The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after a man shot multiple times died early Sunday morning. 75-year-old woman dies in South Boston house fire
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. – Firefighters found the body of a 75-year-old woman as they were working to extinguish a house fire in South Boston on Tuesday. The 911 came in at 11:41 a.m. for a house fire at 1929 Crawley Ave. Firefighters arrived to find a two-story home engulfed in heavy smoke and flames, according to the South Boston Police Department. The house was declared a total loss after the heavy fire damage, according to police. Virginia State Police’s Bomb and Arson Unit is assisting South Boston police in the investigation to determine the fire’s cause and origin.
’It’s a pretty good flood’: Dan River flooding leaves South Boston intersection underwater
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. – The intense rain that fell in Virginia this week caused some South Boston residents to predict the Dan River would overflow in their town. “When you get a lot of rain like we’ve had in the mountains and all the water comes down the Dan River, that’s when we really flood,” said longtime South Boston resident Floyd Sreves. That premonition came true Saturday; according to the National Weather Service, the Dan River reached the moderate flooding stage in South Boston, with a measured height of 29 feet. The river lashed near the bottom of the Watkins Bridge, which carries Highway 501 into downtown South Boston, and flooded the road leading up to the bridge. "This is not the worst that we’ve seen in Halifax County, it’s been a lot worse than this.”The Dan River is not expected to crest in South Boston until early Sunday morning.
Former state trooper, wife killed in Christmas Eve murder-suicide in Halifax County
HALIFAX COUNTY, Va. – A former Virginia state trooper and his wife were found dead after murder-suicide on Christmas Eve, according to the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office. Both died of apparent gunshot wounds after Philip Leath killed Lori Leath and then himself, according to the Sheriff’s Office. According to Richmond Times-Dispatch public salary databases, Philip Leath last received a salary from state police in 2017. The bodies were taken to the state medical examiner’s office in Roanoke for autopsies, according to the Sheriff’s Office. The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office worked with the South Boston Police Department, Virginia State Police and Virginia Department of Transportation.

Police respond to a stabbing incident in South Boston
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. – The South Boston Police Department responded to the 1300 block of Shpherd Street in South Boston for a call of a stabbing on Saturday. The incident took place around 5 p.m. Saturday night. According to officers, a 23-year-old male was found on the scene with non-life threatening injuries. Warrants have been obtained for Malicious Wounding and Assault and Battery against 42-year-old Jessie Ray Bowers of South Boston. Police are currently seeking whereabouts of Bowers.
Man severely hurt after being hit by a car in South Boston Saturday night
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. – South Boston Police say a 38-year-old man is in the hospital after being hit by a car around 6:30 p.m. Saturday. Officials say the man tried to cross Broad Street when he was hit by a Toyota. A 41-year-old from Halifax County was driving the vehicle. South Boston Fire Department along with the Halifax County Rescue Squad responded to the scene and took the man hit to Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital for severe injuries. We do not know the names of the driver or the man hit at this time.
Suspects in custody in three armed robberies in Halifax, Campbell counties
HALIFAX COUNTY, Va. - Authorities arrested two South Boston men in connection with three recent armed robberies. Shyheim Williams, 21, and Tyquanta Moorman, 23, were arrested Friday in connection with two armed robberies in Halifax County and one robbery in Campbell County. Williams and Moorman are each charged with three counts of armed robbery, three counts of burglary and three counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, according to the Halifax County Sheriff's Office. The charges stem from the Aug. 11 robbery at the Dollar General of Chatham Road in Halifax County, the July 11 robbery of the Country Express in Volens and the Sept. 29 robbery of the Dollar General in Brookneal. Williams and Moorman are both being held at Blue Ridge Regional Jail without bond.

Shocking moment as lightning strikes boat in Boston
BOSTON - As powerful storms rolled through Massachusetts on Saturday, one person caught the exact moment a boat owner got extremely unlucky. A passerby recorded a bolt of lightning striking a boat docked in South Boston in a video obtained by CNN affiliate WFXT. The owner wasn't on the boat and no one was hurt. The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a warning for heavy rainfall and flooding in the Boston area Saturday afternoon. The shocking video also caught the attention of the weather service, which said it was a "great example of why we say 'When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors!'"
