William Fleming gets key win over Staunton River amid playoff push
ROANOKE, Va. โ Coming into the night fifth in Region 5D standings with only four teams qualifying this season, William Fleming needed a win. With a decisive 42-0 victory and a loss by Harrisonburg, itโs likely the two teams will flip flop. Fleming certainly wonโt be able to coast into the postseason as the Colonels wrap the regular season campaign against Franklin County.
William Fleming gets first win of the season with 32-22 defeat of Glenvar
SALEM, Va. โ Glenvar got within a point of William Fleming, but the Colonels outlasted the Highlanders on Tuesday night. In the third quarter, Fleming only led 23-22; however, the Colonels would go on to score 9-straight and go home with a 32-22 victory.

Over at Patrick Henry, the Region 5D finals were underway, Patriots facing the William Fleming Colonels. Patrick Henry the victor, winning 66-65, and claiming back-to-back region titles. Area stars sign on to the next level
At Cave Spring Suzanne Harris heads to JMU for swimming and Zada Porter will play hoops at Appy State. Porter said she always felt like Appalachian State would be home, ever since here first visit as an eighth grader. โMostly App State was for the coaching staff. Of course every school tries to make you feel like family, but for App State I always had an idea they would be the place I called home next,โ Porter says. โI donโt have to worry about my parents paying for college first and that I get to play basketball for another 4 years is something thatโs another relief for me,โ Anderson says.
Roanoke City schools welcome back student-athletes for workouts
But itโs a huge step when you consider it marks the beginning of the return of high school athletics in the state of Virginia. Patrick Henry and William Fleming were back on the football field today, with strict social-distancing guidelines in place. I think thatโs what these 3-4 months has taught us is just how much just being around each other means. Patrick Henry volleyball also started workouts Monday. The VHSL is set to meet in about 3 1-2 more weeks to further discuss possible fall sports scenarios.
Fleming football sending 40 percent of their senior roster to next level
Roanoke, Va. โ Itโs a number we like to talk about, and the larger it gets, the better off we all are. Forty percent of William Flemingโs senior class is headed to play football in college. Daequan Nichols is a versatile talent, passing for 1000 yards and 8 touchdowns, and catching five as well. โIt makes us feel great knowing that we have this many people are determined --not just to go to college but to play sports in college. Not many people get to play at the next level,โ Nichols said.
Three Colonels celebrate next step to Averett University
Roanoke Va. โ There was a family celebration for trio of Colonels at Countryside Sports Complex. Two Colonel football players and a girls basketball player are all headed to Averett University to continue their careers. Sheโs a three point sharpshooter at guard who was a big contributor for the Colonels perennial playoff teams. And teammate Nick Andrews is another wide receiver and defensive back who was a starter his senior season. All three are headed to Averett, and all three are good examples of hard work paying off.
Colonels get victory in Roy Stanley Memorial Basketball Shootout
Salem โ Coach Mickey Hardyโs Colonels defeated Carlisle 68-61 on Saturday in the second game of the 2020 Roy Stanley Memorial Basketball Shootout. For over 30 years, Roy Stanley was a fixture on local Roanoke television sports. The tournament honorโs Royโs legacy and the impact in made in the sports community. The Liberty Christian Girls defeated Roanoke Catholic 49-28. The Cave Spring girls took down Amherst Co. 58-39.
