Hokies softball beats Syracuse, advance to ACC semifinal
Championship quarterfinals over seven innings of work to help the Virginia Tech Hokies over the Orange 2-1. With the win, Tech advances to the semifinals of the ACC Championship In addition to her 10 strikeouts, Rochard (23-2) tossed seven innings, giving up one run on seven hits and walking four for Virginia Tech (41-6). Freshman Bre Peck led the way offensively for the Hokies, going 1-for-3 in the ballgame with a home run and an RBI. Junior Morgan Overaitis also helped out, going 1-for-2 for Virginia Tech with an RBI. Sophomore Emma Ritter provided some offense as well, going 1-for-2 with a double and a walk.
MLB builds a ‘Field of Dreams’ as Rustburg Dixie Softball does the same in Campbell County
On Thursday, the New York Yankees and the Chicago White Sox are playing a Major League Baseball game in a cornfield in Iowa, inspired by the movie ‘Field of Dreams.’ Meanwhile in Campbell County, leaders of the Rustburg Dixie Softball League continue to build a field of dreams of their own.

On Tuesday night, Franklin County defeated William Byrd 3-0 in a Blue Ridge District matchup in Vinton. Terriers ace pitcher and Virginia Tech commit Tyler Dean had nine strikeouts in the first 4 innings of play, while Franklin County’s Preston Crowl held the Terriers scoreless.
Rustburg Dixie Softball breaks ground on Campbell County sports complex
CAMPBELL COUNTY, Va. – If you build it, they will come. Campbell County residents broke ground Tuesday on a field of dreams of their own. Rustburg Dixie Softball turned the soil on their new James B. The $600,000 project includes three softball fields, dugouts, lighting and a concession stand. You know, that’s what we’ve always wanted and that’s what we have worked so hard for.” Said Roman.
Senior softball players finally get a senior night and a chance to play
The 2020 senior softball games at the Burton fields gave those softball seniors who had their season campaigns unceremoniously cancelled due to Covid-19 a final chance to kick up some dirt as a prep player. Four all senior teams have been assembled for two nights of action. Something like they all would have received at their high schools during senior night, usually held during the teams final home game. James Rivers Payton Kreklow was named the games MVP after collecting 2 hits and 4 RBIs on the night. Lord Botetourts Meredith Wells was the games MVP after cranking a three-run home run.
Area seniors-only softball game to be played in Salem
ROANOKE, Va. For area softball seniors who missed out on their final season due to the coronavirus, they now have a chance to play one last game. Former William Byrd star Kassie Brammer is organizing the event, which will be held at the Burton softball fields. On both days, games will start at 7 p.m. with a senior ceremony held at 5:45 p.m. This is your last chance, youre a senior, you deserve this. Youre starting in your starting position and playing all seven innings.
Area VHSL state softball champs: One year later
Bedford, Va./Riner, Va. – Liberty High School softball was ready for the 2020 season after winning the Class 3 state title a year ago. “Really excited about what we had, but at the same time you’re constantly thinking about who youre going to play and what not,” Liberty head softball coach Mike Thompson said. The Auburn star shortstop committed to play softball at Radford, and was ready for her final season, hoping to defend Auburn’s Class 1 title. Coaches have been told to treat this new time as a dead period, which means limited contact with the players pertaining to softball. And even though Boyd is heading off to play at the next level, there’s no replacement for a high school senior season.
