ROANOKE, Va. โ Firefighters responded to a fire at an abandoned home in Southeast Roanoke on Monday afternoon. Shortly after 3:45 p.m., crews arrived at an abandoned home in the 1100 block of Jamison Ave SE and saw smoke coming from inside of it. Within 10 minutes, the fire was marked under control. No one was hurt and fire officials are investigating the cause.

ROANOKE, Va. โ Krystal Brownell said sheโs blessed to be alive after a fire tore through her southeast Roanoke home Tuesday morning, but thatโs nearly all she has left. โI saw black smoke everywhere.โSadly, a puppy died within the fire. Brownellโs friend Laura Davis picked her up from the hospital the night of the fire. Davis created a GoFundMe for the family and is allowing them to live with her until they find another home of their own. โI called my boss and said, โLook, Iโve got to go to the hospital,โโ Davis said.

One person is hurt with a non-life-threatening injury and taken to a hospital, according to the fire department. Roanoke River Greenway will finally connect Roanoke and Salem
During Monday nightโs Roanoke City Council meeting, the council unanimously approved the land swap that allows the city to complete the Roanoke River Greenway within city limits. It seems that the ability to stay on the Roanoke River Greenway from Salem all the way to Southeast Roanoke is coming. The red-and-black dashed line shows the portion of the Roanoke River Greenway that's planned for the Walker Foundry property. In August 2017, Roanoke City Council authorized the use of eminent domain to claim the land; however, in April 2019, city council voted to stop pursuing eminent domain. The property listing includes this site plan, which includes an extended Roanoke River Greenway, canoe landing, as well as a restaurant.

We have killed more people than the police will ever kill when it comes down to gang violence and violence period,โ said English. During a virtual meeting with Roanoke Cityโs Study Committee to Reduce Gun Violence on Friday morning, English shared his ideas. One of the models treats gun violence like a disease.
Roanoke food pantry looking for volunteers amid coronavirus pandemic
ROANOKE, Va A food bank in Southeast Roanoke is working around the clock to fight food insecurity as unemployment numbers continue to rise. For the last 27 years, the Christian Soldiers Food Pantry has depended on funding from churches in the area, but since congregations are not meeting as much in traditional ways, donations have been cut in half. Last year, the food bank fed more than 30,000 people in the Roanoke area. Restrictions in place caused by the coronavirus have caused the food bank to lose volunteers who have potentially compromised immune systems. Volunteers pack food five days a week for people in Roanoke who need it.

This is the last meeting before the group's presentation to city council next month. ROANOKE, Va. - Fire crews extinguished a house fire in Southeast Roanoke on Tuesday morning. Dispatch confirms firefighters responded to a home near the intersection of 13th Street and Morton Avenue. Around 5:50 a.m., Roanoke Fire-EMS responded to the fire in the 1200 block of 13th Street SE. No one was inside when the fire started and no one was hurt by the fire, according to Roanoke Fire-EMS. Crews got the fire under control by 6:19 a.m., according to Roanoke Fire-EMS.
Police: Girl hospitalized after walking into street, getting hit by car in Southeast Roanoke
ROANOKE, Va. - A girl is in the hospital after police say she walked into the street and was hit by a car in Southeast Roanoke Tuesday morning. Officers say they responded to the intersection of 9th Street and Murray Avenue SE for a report that someone was hit by a car. When officers arrived, they say they found the girl in the roadway and she was taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital for non-life threatening injuries. Early investigations show that the driver was stopped to allow children to cross the street, according to police. Police say the driver proceeded after all the children had crossed, but the girl then walked out into the street.

"It's just blowing in hotter air and it's just circulating that and that could lead to heat exhaustion and heat stroke," Boyd said. At this point, no cooling shelters will be open during the heat wave in Roanoke, Blacksburg, Martinsville or Christiansburg. Victims of heat-related illness should be moved to a cool place, given cool water to drink and ice packs or cool wet cloths should be applied to the skin.
