Jessica McKay, manager of Main Street Café and Coffee, believes this is another way to connect with consumers during COVID. Sandridge added any Main Street community across the country can set up the Distrx app, that way visitors receive notifications instantly. “So, if you’re living in Florida, but you visit here in Altavista; if you have the app, you’re going to get a notification the moment you come into the downtown district,” said Sandridge.

Central Virginia deals with latest round of wintry weather
CAMPBELL COUNTY, Va. – Though they weren’t hit as hard as other areas, Central Virginia is dealing with the latest round of wintry weather. Continuing along U.S. 29 South, utility crews were busy replacing poles and wires. In Altavista, you could see a fleet of utility crews in a nearby parking lot, getting ready to head back out on the road. VDOT was also on the roads throughout Central Virginia, and officials encourage motorists to stay home. Regardless of where you live, the advice is the same: stay home, stay warm, and stay off the roads.
Campbell County residents file complaints about solar farm construction
CAMPBELL COUNTY, Va. – Campbell County residents have filed complaints saying that construction crews are damaging roadways near a new solar farm. DEPCOM Power, an Arizona-based engineering and construction company, is the contractor for the project. Two hospitalized, one firefighter injured following house fire in Altavista
ALTAVISTA, Va. – The Altavista Fire Company said that a house fire that happened Wednesday night is still under investigation. At 11:39 p.m., crews responded to a house fire on the 1100 block of 7th Street with reports of trapped victims. Units arrived at the scene to find a two-story structure with heavy smoke showing from the second-floor windows. Authorities said the victim on the roof was quickly rescued by a ladder and crews conducted searches to ensure no other people were inside the house. A firefighter suffered minor injuries from the incident and was evaluated at LGH before being released shortly after.
Police identify pedestrian killed in Campbell County crash as 26-year-old woman
CAMPBELL COUNTY, Va. – Virginia State Police have released the name of the woman who died early Monday morning. The crash remains under investigation. One person is dead after a crash early Monday morning on Wards Road, according to Virginia State Police. At 1:17 a.m., Virginia State Police responded to a crash involving a pedestrian near Lynchburg Highway. The pedestrian died at the scene and police said the crash remains under investigation.
Altavista police arrest 23-year-old man in connection with July sexual assault
ALTAVISTA, Va. – On Thursday, police arrested a 23-year-old Altavista man they believe sexually assaulted someone in July, according to the Altavista Police Department. Nelson O’Neal Dews II was indicted on the following charges by a grand jury:Object sexual penetration Sodomy StrangulationPolice arrested Dews and took him to the Blue Ridge Regional Jail in Rustburg, where he’s being held without bond.

Altavista police searching for man wanted for breaking and entering
ALTAVISTA, Va. Authorities in Altavista are searching for a man they say is wanted for breaking and entering. Officers responded to a home in the 700 block of 11th Street on Wednesday in response to the incident. Authorities are searching for Calvin Furline, 27, of Hurt for entering a dwelling with the intent to commit larceny, assault and battery or another felony violation.
