Javonte Reeves rushed of a first half score and quarterback Ian Ashworth hit Ayden White for a second quarter touchdown pass to account for the scoring. The Maroon Tide (10-2) bottled up the power ground game led by RB John Snider in check throughout the game. Th Blues finish the season 9-4. Galax moves on to take on Region 1D champion Holston in the state semifinals.

Three hikers rescued from abandoned mine in Carroll County
GALAX, Va. – Three hikers are lucky to be alive after they were rescued from a mine in Carroll County on Monday night. Three women, in their early 20s, went hiking but got lost in an old abandoned iron mine in Carroll County. Within 15 minutes, 60 first responders were on scene, including Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, Galax Police Department’s K9 unit, Pipers Gap Rescue Squad and Baywood Search and Rescue Squad. Ayers says the three hikers did the right thing once they realized they were lost. As a parent, Ayers said he’s grateful these hikers made it out safely.

Crews rescued three hikers from a mine shaft in Galax on Monday nightThree female hikers were rescued from a mine in Galax on Monday night, according to the Galax Fire Department. Authorities said they got the call for the missing women around 9:25 p.m. for the 3000 block of Iron Ridge Road. Crews were able to find the hikers by 10:15 p.m. and they said it took around 45 minutes to get them out of the mines. The hikers and the rescue crews were back at the command post by 11:30 p.m. Authorities said that around 60 first responders worked the incident.
Man arrested in connection to bomb threat at Galax nursing home
Jason Hill has been arrested in connection with a bomb threat at a nursing homeGALAX. Va. – A man in Galax is wanted for threatening to bomb a nursing home Monday evening, according to the Galax Police Department. At about 5:05 p.m., the Galax Police Department received a call from the Galax Health and Rehabilitation Center located on 836 Glendale Road. Galax Police responded to the scene and secured the area with Galax Fire and Rescue on standby in a nearby area. Hill was released by Twin County Hospital just after midnight on Tuesday and was taken into custody, police said.
Carroll County scores 20 unanswered, defeating Floyd County
GALAX, Va. – Monday night’s season opener wasn’t quite a home game for either team. Rather than play at Floyd County, both squads traveled to Galax to play on the turf. After falling into a 14-point hole, the Caroll County Cavaliers would go on to score 20 straight, winning 20-14, and start the season 1-0.
VHSL Wrestling Championships: Classes 1 and 4
SALEM, Va. – Salem Civic Center will be the epicenter of VHSL State wrestling championships for the next 3 days. The Golden Wave advanced 9 wrestlers into Finals matches, resulting in 6 first place wins. Galax had an individual champion in Brender Rojas at the 285 pound weight class. Down in Virginia Beach at the Class 4 championships, Amherst County finished 4th as a team. The Lancers had an individual winner at the 182 weight class in Kaine Morris.
Three cats dead, woman hurt in Galax mobile home fire
GALAX, Va. – A woman is hurt and three cats are dead after a fire in Galax on Thursday morning. At about 8:25 a.m, firefighters responded to 14 City View Trailer Park to find a mobile home on fire. As firefighters worked to stop the blaze, they were unable to save any of the cats inside the mobile home.

Rabid fox warning issued after animal control officer attacked in Galax
GALAX, Va. – The Mount Rogers Health District issued a warning in the Galax area due to a fox that tested positive for rabies. On Wednesday, a gray fox attacked an Animal Control Officer on the 900 block of West Stuart Drive in Galax. The fox recently fought with other animals indicated by hair in its teeth, creating additional disease reservoirs that may become rabid in the following months. Health officials warn that rabies is fatal once symptoms appear. If any person or anyone’s pets have been in contact with the gray fox, you’re asked to contact the Galax Health Department at 276-236-6127.

The Galax Police Department posted to its Facebook page on Wednesday letting people know that Jermaine Alexander Mittman Jr. had been found. As leadership changes are made, state inspectors cite Galax animal shelter in new report
GALAX, Va. – Officials continue to make changes at a local animal shelter after it was criticized for allegedly fostering an unhealthy environment that led to permanent injury and several dead animals. 10 News obtained copies of an unannounced December inspection at the Galax-Carroll-Grayson Animal Shelter. [Galax officials respond to complaint of alleged negligent management at animal shelter]“We’re underway to address the concerns the inspector had,” said Galax city manager Keith Barker. One of those changes would be the demotion of the shelter manager in question, Jessica Boyer, whom we have learned resigned sometime after our first report. He believes overcrowding led to overwhelming the previous team.

Galax officials respond to complaint of alleged negligent management at animal shelter
GALAX, Va. – Leaders of the Galax-Carroll-Grayson Animal Shelter are responding to claims of negligent management that led to permanent injury and several dead animals. Keith Barker, Galax City Manager, said he was unaware of some issues but that they are working to correct some wrongs. In response to the dog bite, Barker says he was not notified until Homeward Trails, the leading organization behind the complaint, contacted him. The former shelter manager, Jessica Boyer, was reassigned to Shelter Technician effective Dec. 10. Shelter technicians are assigned duties by the shelter manager related to cleaning and feeding, according to the email sent to 10 News.
