FRANKLIN COUNTY, Va. – Two people are dead in Franklin County after authorities said a woman killed a man and then shot herself on Thursday evening. At about 5 p.m., a woman called 911 from Piney Point Road in Union Hall, told authorities that she killed someone and then hung up the phone, according to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office. A few minutes later, a man called 911, also from Piney Point Road, saying his wife shot herself. When deputies arrived at the woman’s home on Piney Point Road, they said they found the 65-year-old with life-threatening injuries. Authorities have not yet identified the man and 10 News is choosing to not identify the woman due to the suspected nature of her death.

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Va – Despite challenges from the coronavirus pandemic, the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office is working to help give back to those in need this holiday season. In the past, the Sheriff’s Office has sold Christmas trees to help give back to people in the community. COVID-19 restrictions have caused several fundraising events to be canceled, but deputies and other workers at the Sheriff’s Office are still working with several churches to help donate toys and other gifts ahead of the holidays. “We’re hoping to reach about 20 families so about half of what we normally do but we can’t do it without the churches in the area and the support of the community so we’re excited to provide what we can provide,” Franklin County Sheriff Sergeant Megan Patterson said. The Sheriff’s Office says it may not be able to help every church in the area but hope to make as much of a difference as possible this year.

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Va. – Burglars broke into two local convenience stores early Tuesday, according to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities said the pair got away with cash and cigarettes. The pair burglarized the Eagle Mart located at 7645 Hardy Road in Hardy and the Redwood Express Mart located at 3362 Old Franklin Turnpike in Glade Hill. The Sheriff’s Office described the burglars as two middle-aged men wearing masks and head coverings. FRANKLIN COUNTY, Va. – The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office is reporting new coronavirus cases. On Monday, Sheriff Bill Overton announced that late last month, during a daily screening process, an inmate was quarantined and tested for COVID-19 after presenting sinus/allergy-like symptoms. That person did indeed test positive, which prompted more testing throughout the jail. Since then, other offenders, as well as Sheriff’s Office staff have tested positive. Some inmates have been taken to the Western Virginia Regional Jail as it has a greater capacity to house offenders, while providing any necessary medical care and isolation from their healthy population, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Officials say inmate Curtis Sparks, 35, was found in the area of Power Dam Road in Franklin County around 6:00 p.m. on Sunday. According to the sheriff’s office Sparks is serving a sentence as a non-violent offender and is known to frequent Henry and Botetourt County. FRANKLIN COUNTY, Va. – A local K9 is ready to safely take on the job thanks to a donation of a bullet and stab-proof protective vest. The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office received a donation for their K9, Sasha, from Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., sponsored by Don and Misty Fike of Galesburg, IL. The nonprofit’s mission is to “provide bullet and stab-protective vests and other assistance to dogs of law enforcement and related agencies throughout the country.”Two-year-old Sasha’s vest is in full service as she works alongside her handler, deputy Alejandro with the Sheriff’s Office.

FRANKLIN CO., Va. – On Saturday the Franklin County Communications Center received a 911 call at around 9:00 pm alerting of a subject in the river in distress. The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office and Franklin County Public Safety responded to the incident in the 5000 block of Brooks Mill Road. Rescue searches were conducted, but officials were unable to locate the subject and rescheduled the search to Sunday morning. Franklin County deputies and Public Safety responded. Multiple agencies assisted the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, including the Virginia State Police. Deputies are trying to talk to a man in his late 20s who has barricaded himself inside an underground storm shelter, according to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office. The Sheriff’s Office is asking drivers to detour and avoid the area.
